Truly sorry to learn of Cathal's passing. Earliest and fondest memories of after-school treats at Pembroke Road and The Tinderbox on LP. Our deepest sympathies to Emma and all Cathal's family and many friends. Requiescet in pace.
Cathal taught, supported, encouraged and fostered generations of Irish architects. His commitment and contribution to UCD was immense. Through his teaching and through his own excellence in practice, he made architecture seem a noble, important and worthwhile pursuit. He set the tone for all of us, and will continue to set the standard. We are all indebted to him.

To Emma & Rebecca, Nicholas, Garrett and Melissa and all the O’Neill family, I heard with great sadness the news of the death of your beloved father and to all of us students at UCD, our Professor. We respected him greatly in college but in the years after I personally grew to hugely admire him and reflect that you must be all so sad now on the passing of someone so special. But you must also be so proud to have such a special, lovely man as your father and to know that he was loved and admired by so many. May he rest in Peace.
My condolences to Garrett and all the O'Neill family. Cathal was a gentleman . May he rest in peace
I was very sorry to hear of The Prof's passing. Always enjoyed bumping into him and loved to see him on the bike or in the Fiat 500 with the big hat and flowing coat! He never seemed to get any older. The place will be all the poorer for his passing. Sincere condolences to all his family.
SO sorry to hear of the passing back to Spirit, of 'me auld Professor'. We had a lovely chat in a gallery not too long ago. A twinkling eye that SAW! Even when he disagreed his open mind welcomed difference and he approved a visiting speaker for my thesis year, whom I just about restrained from drawing on the wall ! - of the Earlsfort Kevin Barry Rm, now NCH: (where the Treaty had been agreed. ) Cathal you upheld learning, kindness and humour: go well ! where the Webb telescope is now showing us: slàn, beó, fós..........
My sincere condolences to the O'Neill family on the death of Cathal. He was a true gentleman, a delight to meet with. Ni beidh a leitheid aris ann. Niamh, Clontarf

Very sad to hear of Professor Cathal O’Neill’s passing. As the professor to all of us students of architecture in Richview, he exuded a warmth, a positivity and a humility, all delivered with a beautiful smile, which made him very accessible to us. He was like our friendly, very hip and cool grandfather - always immaculately and sharply dressed, who greeted us with a warm and genuine interest.
Sincere sympathies to Garrett and all his family and dear friends. May he rest in peace.

In our late teens and beyond Cathal was the coolest of all the fathers in 'the gang' . Through the forty years or more that I knew him, he was always interested in you, and what you were doing. The most generous of men, in spirit and time. Engaging, charming, intelligent beyond words. Every time I met him was an occasion, a delight. I will miss him.

Dear Garrett and Emma, please accept our condolences on the loss of your father and convey them to your siblings and extended family.
We do not need to convey to you what a wonderful man Cathal was. From a studio master to a benefactor of his art to the Irish Architects Benevolent Society last year, he was a gifted mentor over fifty years.
We would often offer him a lift into the office as he walked and we drove - he always refused! That time between home and office was very special for him. He was particularly good to me, Robin, in my RIAI days, when his support was even stronger than when I was a student of his.
We shall miss him and remember all of the good times from AAI tennis to Professorship.
May he rest in well-deserved peace.
