My heart sank this evening when I looked over from my wife Mairéad's resting place to young Robbie's nearby and saw the freshly dug soil covered in flowers. A check in rip.ie confirmed that my dear Balgriffin buddy Cathy is now reunited with her beloved son, may they rest in eternal peace. We hadn't chatted there for a while and I didn't know she must have been ill.
I first met her and Robert there in 2021 when he was turning the soil on a grave. We got chatting and after a bit Cathy pointed to the next grave and said "This is our son's". "So who's is this you're working on?" I asked. "No idea but nobody's been near it for months" she replied. What wonderful kindness and it didn't end there because I know very well who made sure there were always flowers on that next grave!
