Dear Celia,
Sadness mixed with joyful memories of a special Uncle and a life well lived. You had the blessed fortune to have a husband who always loved you and therefore loved life.

We will forever remember Charles’s fine singing voice, his helping hand, his happy outlook and his lovely mild manner. He was a considerate and close brother and brother in law to my Mother & Father and held a special place in all our lives. As Joseph, my brother would call this loss - the closing of a door. Rest in peace Uncle Charles.

Charles was a man of integrity. I got to know him when I went to work in the Independent
Newspapers. We worked together in the teletype room with four colleagues. There was a lot of banter and some backbiting.... Charles always avoided the latter but would be involved in good natured banter. Every new month he would arrive in and cheerfully announce “happy new month”. His colleagues always had the greatest of respect for him.

He had at least three loves in his life. He loved painting and could explain in great detail how he achieved the light in his paintings. His love for music was the second, whether playing an instrument or singing. He achieved success on stage and radio with a harmony group called the Four Ambassadors, eventually releasing a record. Both he and Celia were members of St. James Choral Society.

By far the greatest love of his life was always Celia. I recall how precious to him his time off work with Celia was. Whether they were tending the garden, going to Aughrim, travelling in the caravan or further afield, he was always at his happiest when Celia was with him.
Grace and I are travelling in Australia. We’re so sorry we never got to say goodbye to Charles but he will always have a place in our hearts. He was the epitome of a perfect gentleman and the world is all the better now for him having been in it.

We will cherish the many wonderful memories of the times we spent with Charles and Celia: summer days in Aughrim, high tea in Hazelwood, Christmases in Enniscorthy, holidays in Sligo and Kerry and the very many birthday celebrations Charles and Celia organised or participated in. We have nothing but fond memories of Charles and we will remember him forever as a wonderfully kind, gentle, and generous uncle.
