Our sincere sympathy on the death of your beloved Charles. Not just a great scholar but a great human being whose concern for his students was always his priority. I valued greatly, his friendship over many years in UCD. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
Amy, I’m so very sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. Thinking of you and your family at this very sad time.
Our Charlie was a scholar and a gentleman. He was passionate about his life’s work and his family. A true renaissance man, he was as good at physical tasks as theoretical ones. He loved music and poetry as much as fitness and manual labour.
His sense of humour could be a bit off-beat at times and he always laughed longest at his own jokes. I could not have asked for a better sibling. I have always been proud to call him brother. He is missed, but never forgotten.
Sincerest condolences to all the Doherty family. It was a privilege and a pleasure to meet Charlie over the years, to hear his inspiring lectures, and reading his thought provoking work.
Sincere condolences on the passing of your dear Dad Amy. Thinking of you at this sad time.
Sincere condolences on this terrible loss. Charlie was fine scholar whose papers had a major and lasting impact on the thinking of archaeologists as well as historians. He was also an absolute gentleman, very kind and supportive to all regardless of seniority. He will be sorely missed.
Sincere condolences to all his family on the sad news of Charlie’s passing. With happy memories of our first meeting in Spoleto in 1974 and later as a UCD colleague who bore his learning lightly: saoi séimh sár-eolach. Go raibh suaimhneas buan ag a anam uasal. Pádraig Breatnach
To Amy and family, I’m very sorry for your loss. May your dad rest in peace.
My sincere and heartfelt Condolences to you Amy and all the family on the loss of your dear father Charles. May he rest in peace and God grant you all the strength to bear his passing. 🌈🙏
Comhbhron o chroi le clann Charlie ar a bhas. Charlie's life was dedicated to his family and scholarship but he also always found time to engage in lively, witty and learned conversation with visitors from without UCD.. He gave so much and the pity is that he was taken from us when he had so much more to give.
We are devastated by this news. We remember Charlie as a wonderful friend from our years in Dublin (1969-78) and since: he has visited us twice in Leeds and I remember in particular my trip with him to Inishmore in 1976. Our deep sympathies to Majella and the family.
Have just heard of Charlie's passing. Am deeply saddened to hear,. and send my sympathies to his family. Charlie was a true scholar and friend from the early days of our meeting in Earlsfort Tce UCD. Slan agus beannacht Charlie. Paddy Duffy
I learned so much from Charlie’s courses during my undergraduate studies at University College Dublin. He was a rigorous scholar and a talented teacher whose passion for the subject of early Irish history enlivened the teaching space. He taught in a conversational style; something that left a lasting impression on me. My condolences to his family on his passing.
Comhbhrón le Majella agus leis an gclann ar bhás Charlie. Fear lách cuirtéiseach agus scoláire cumasach. Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam.

Heartbroken to hear of your dad's passing Amy, may he rest in peace x
My condolences to Charlie's family and friends. He was a lovely colleague and made a significant contribution to the teaching of archival studies in UCD.
Charlie was a colleague and a contemporary over a very long period. His kindness and academic enthusiasm was so striking as was his basic humility. He is a great loss.
My deepest condolences. I was very lucky to be assigned Charlie as my tutor as a first year history student in UCD in the early 90s. He was kind mentor and advisor both formally (and more frequently informally) throughout my academic studies in UCD. He was so influential not just as a result of his own academic researches and publication but in the generations of early medieval scholars who were guided by him and supported/inspired in the early stages of their academic careers.
Amy, sending you heartfelt condolences during this sad time.
Is mian liom a mbris a chásamh le muintir Charlie.
I don’t think I have the words to express what Charlie meant to me in my undergraduate years in College, perhaps the fact that John McCafferty and myself regularly burst into ‘Charlie is my darling’ after another fab early Christian Ireland class with Charlie will say more than all the words of praise that come to mind. Míle Buíochas Charlie, Suaimhneas síoraí do d’anam uasal….
My family are so sorry to hear about Charlie's passing. Condolences to Majella and family.

So sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. I also knew him from his time as President of RSAI. He was a true gentleman and he wore his learning so lightly. Ar dheis lamh De go raibh a h-anam dilis.

A true gent whose humility was matched only by his amazing scholarship and genial nature: Charlie has left us not just a body of outstanding scholarship but a bank of very happy memories and good karma. He is missed and remembered. Condolences.
My sincerest sympathies on your loss. I was a student of Charlie's in the early 1990s and later worked together in the Group for the Study of Irish Historic Settlement. He was brilliant, both on an academic and personal level. Always approachable and supportive to younger scholars. He always cared and it showed. He will be missed.

I was so fortunate to have Charlie as my lecturer in early Irish history at UCD in the late 1970's. I have great memories of him unrolling metres long paper scrolls of early hagiographical records that he had carefully transcribed. He spoke of them with such boundless enthusiasm.
Ar dheis Cholmcille go raibh sé agus i gcomhluadar na naomh uile !

Sincere condolences on the passing of Charlie. I remember him as a kind and gentle man. As a fellow historian of early medieval Ireland, I admired his scholarship combined with his warm humanity. I remember with fondness being with Charlie at a conference in Rome in 2007 and meeting him again at the ICM in UCD in 2015. May he rest in peace.
