So sorry to hear of Charles passing, it was my absolute pleasure to look after his office for nearly 25 years, he was an absolute gentleman, I have such fond memories of him, his great stories, and always brought Kate to see me when she was a small girl, I will never forget him my sincere condolences to Celia and family, Barbara x
Sadly, I only learned today about Charles passing.
He was a great, thoughtful, wise 'background' mentor; through his advise and support I owe my lifelong career to this very day. He changed TCD geosciences in the 1960s and from which it still benefits today; and he understood deeply that stratigraphy remains the cornerstone of geology. Hamla gashle.
I remember the Professor with much affection and esteem, I remember him in Modena many years ago ... I was struck by his attention, availability but above all his great humility; he asked me about my PhD thesis and about the cephalopods I was studying in the Carnic Alps; he also asked me for a specimen to study, for me it was a great honor.
I remember also when we talked about his experiences during the war.

thank you
Professor, thank you for teaching me so much
your "poor" student Paolo

Rest well my friend - you live on in our memories.
Sorry to hear the news - condolences to Celia and family. Very fond memories of the Prof. and many thanks for all the help he gave me supervising my Ph.D.
An absolute gentleman , may he rest in peace .
Thank you Prof, for bringing me to Ireland and for all the PhD encouragement.
So sorry for the loss of your dear Dad. I will always remember his kindness as a neighbour and when I stayed with your family to finish up my Leaving Cert before returning to Canada. Thinking of you at this sad time.
A great teacher and philosopher and a faithful friend. I treasure the visits I made to Howth in June and September this year.
Sincere condolences Celia and family on the passing of your dear Dad. Such a great man. I will always have very fond memories.
Remembering Charles with fondest memories
of our time as his neighbours at #4.
From his Canadian friends.
