My father Seanie and Charlie's mother Claire were sister and brother so our paths crossed over the years of course, despite the water between us. I have three abiding memories: Summer 1975 when I spent the summer at my granny's aged 17 in Shantella, and Claire decanted from Letterkenny with her four children too. Charlie then was far too quiet for me. But when my grandmother died in February 1991, we all spent a great deal of time at my granny's house. We all had to take a turn ( tradition) and Charlie had us all enchanted with a comedy sketch which involved the surreptitious peeling of an orange in a pocket. So funny. He was a talent and a raconteur. Very beguiling. I last saw him in early 2019 at my late aunt Kitty Geoghegan's funeral. We were seated next to each other and had a fabulous four hours of chat about the galway arts scene and our family history. He told me about his work, his siblings and his lovely family. He was a gifted man and eclectic in his talents. But also a gentle and intelligent man. He rushed off to cook tea for the family. There are no words of comfort for Aileen Lily and Isobel apart from the knowledge that Charlie was loved and appreciated by everyone he encountered. I watched his funeral service across the water. RIP Charlie McBride xxx

So sorry to hear of Charlie’s passing and my condolences to his family and many many friends. Like many others I enjoyed great Galway hours of his irreverent wit, insights and humour.

I was very sorry to hear of the loss of Charlie McBride. My sincere condolences to his wife Aileen and to their daughters Lily and Isobel, and to extended family. Suaimhneas síoraí dó.

He was respected as a theatre critic and artist in his own right and he offered such extraordinary support to the younger generation of makers and writers. I got to know Charlie a little bit in recent years through his engaging columns in the Galway Advertiser and also through his interest in my own writing. He was a man I was always happy to encounter – usually at an arts event about town - and I always enjoyed our snippets of book banter. My deepest sympathies to Charlie’s family.

I was shocked and saddened to hear this sad news about Charlie. He was such a scholar and unconditional supporter to all of us in the arts. A meeting with him in the House Hotel on a cold Winters day brought you into the literature of other worlds and beyond . I'll be forever grateful for his generosity, insights ,good humour and his time.
