Dear Ciarán,
Sorry I wasn’t there for your final send-off, Old Pal. Gigging in Canada when I got the news and couldn’t get back in time. Your presence is a permanent part of my mental furniture - memories of our many nights of “fireside slabber”, our memorable campaigns through the thickets of Irish Music and Song, of many a “Last Night’s Fun”, of your instinctive understanding of the true nature of vernacular culture. Love, sympathy and condolences to Deirdre and all your family. Ar an ócáid seo is fíor an sean-cliché ... ní bheidh do leithéid arís ann... go deo.
As much the originator and author of The Northern Fiddler Project as Eamonn O Doherty and myself, Ciaran pursued music and poetry in large part as an antidote to violence and political division. His passing is an irrecuperable loss to Irish culture as tragic as the passing of Seamus Heaney, Tommy Peoples and Liam og O Flynn. I will always cherish how he transfigured the oral history given to me by the fiddler John Loughran in the Northern Fiddler, without altering a single word, into the best poem ever on Irish music, dance and friendship.
Beannacht Dé leis.
Farewell Ciaran.-So much to say to you....Tunes ,songs , conversation- never to be forgotten evenings. Thanks mon Cher ami.
Deirdre, Manus, Gerard, Mary please accept our heartfelt love and sympathy xxx D and G
