Clive Armstrong was a gentleman, cut from a rare cloth
After one big win on the horses, 1969?, himself and my father decided to go to Italy on a foreign holiday. My old man got sunburned, never having seen the sun before. He got a passing lady, my mother, to put some cream on his back. Married two years later.
He turned up for a dinner at our house when I was a boy carrying two boxes of Topps chewing gum Star Wars trading cards. One red. One blue.
Maybe the greatest present I ever got.
He was old school class the whole way. He was related to Neil Armstrong, but never told people that. He only told me after my father passed.
He's with Valerie again, but the world is a lesser place for his passing.
God speed, Clive. I'll miss you. x

My sincere condolences to you all on the passing of your Dad Clive. I remember him from Abbey as my Dad Trevor was in the choir and was friendly with Clive (poker games in our house). Clive was a lovely gentleman and as everyone has said very generous with his time. So much so he kindly played the organ in Abbey in 2005 for my Dad's funeral I will always remember him for that. Also remembering your Mum Valerie they'll be together again.
I am so sorry to read of Clive's passing. As a barman in the Lep it was always a pleasure to serve Clive. He was a gentleman and we had many an enjoyable conversation. May he rest in peace. I am sorry I missed his funeral. My sincere sympathies to his family.

I’m so sad to hear that Clive has died. First time I ever heard The Entertainer by Scot Joplin played on the Abbey organ. He was a treasure. Choir practices were a balance of hard work and riotous laughter. All my love to you at this time.

Warwick, deepest sympathy to you, Melanie, Russell and all your families on the death of your Dad. When I was a Curate in Glenageary, the organist didn't turn up one evening and I bravely (or stupidly!) said that we would sing unaccompanied. Your Dad was in the congregation and after the first disastrous effort, he came up to me during the service, asked for the key to the organ console and rescued us! A talented and kind man. Thinking of you all and praying for strength for you. We are sorry that we cannot be with you at the funeral.
I send my condolences to Clive's family and Olive on his death. He was a lovely gentleman and we were lucky in Nas na Ri singers to have him as our Musical Director for some years

Melanie, Warwick and Russell we are so saddened at your Dad's passing. Please accept our deepest sympathy at this difficult time. You have been Clive's pride and joy and his guiding light since the passing of your dear Mother, Valerie.
I met Clive in Abbey Presbyterian Church in 1964, he was Best Man at our wedding in 1970 and we were best friends ever since then.
In the Strollers, Clef Club, Nas na Rí and the many gigs we did together. Clive gave generously of his talents and will be sorely missed.
He is with his maker now at rest, reaping the rewards of a life well spent.

It is with great regret and sadness that we hear of Clive's passing. Our very sincere condolences to Melanie, Warwick and Russell.
So many great memories of living beside Valerie and Clive in Pine Valley- never a dull moment -
A particular memory is Christmas Eve— after all the parents had finished their Santa preparations— we all went to Armstrongs—- we all went in with the same mantra ( every year ) won’t be staying long - lots of work to do—-
However after Valerie served us a lovely supper and Clive dispensed drinks — nobody seemed to have the same urgency about their chores —Great times — Christmas Eve was never quite as much fun since.
Have thoughts when hopefully your Mum and Dad meet up — Valerie will say with her great smile — What kept you Clive —Hope you wiped your feet . Love Valerie and Eddie.

Dear Mel and family, I'm so sorry to her the sad news about your Dad. Thinking of you all and sending love. May Clive RIP with dear Valerie. God bless xxx
I knew Clive from the Guild of Youth in Glasnevin where he played the piano and coached us to sing numbers at our concerts. This led to cricket and hockey with Cremore and later Corinthinans, a holiday in Blackpool to cheer on Clive’s favourite team and a party in his home where Brenda and I met. Clive had style to go with his exceptional musical talent plus a sport car and was the image of Frank Sinatra. Sincere sympathy to all of Clive’s family on his passing.
