My deepest sympathies to Elizabeth and family. Rick was a great colleague in UCD.

I just wanted to send my condolences to Elizabeth and her family. I remember fondly when Rick would pick her up from the exam centre (ucd) for a lunch date. Would love to connect to Liz if you could pass on my number please (0877379443). You’re very much in my thoughts. Love Jacqui
Sincere condolences to Katie and all the Caldicott family on your loss. As a student of French at UCD in the 80s your dad was an inspirational teacher, approachable and very supportive. Qu'il repose en paix.
I was a student of French for a very long time at UCD during Professor Caldicott’s distinguished tenure as Head of Department. He was a true champion of French studies at UCD and in Ireland, and always fought to promote and protect the discipline. He was very helpful to me on an academic and professional level. I know that he was a keen hillwalker too. This fits well with the dynamism one felt from him. His imposing and genial presence will always be remembered. Coincidentally perhaps (but I think it was more than coincidence) I was thinking of him the day before he departed this life. To all of Rick’s family, especially Elizabeth, whom I had the pleasure to meet once while I was part of the staff at the French department, I extend my deepest condolences. I know that he was a founding figure in your lives. It is indeed the end of an era. Rick will be remembered warmly as a stalwart and charismatic figure who did a huge amount to promote the study of French culture on this island. Que son âme repose en paix.
Sincere condolences to Andrew and family on the passing of Mr. Caldicott.
I was a student of Professor Caldicott back in the mid 80’s. I was an average French (& Irish) student studying at pass level. Bizarrely! in my final year I opted for a module on Medieval French taught by the great man himself, me & 7 of the brightest honours students.
I was of course totally out of my depth but he always made me feel an equal to the others.

I failed my grammar paper in Irish in my finals & that required me to resit all my Irish papers & all three French papers (which I had already passed)

A student from the class met him during the summer
& he asked her if I’d passed my Irish & when she told him I’d hadn’t he was adamant that she tell me to concentrate on my Irish for the repeats - my French would be fine!!
It was such an act of kindness to try to reassure a super anxious student I’ll never forget it. (I passed my repeats merci beaucoup!) Ironically I was telling friends about this only a few weeks ago…
I’m so sorry for your loss he was a lovely man.

May he rest in peace
Shirley

Our wishes of deepest sympathy to Elizabeth and family. Rick's presence as a scholar, teacher, colleague and academic leader has touched the lives of many. His friendship and generous support over the years are warmly remembered at this sad time.
Rarely did the words ‘friend and colleague’ have as rich a resonance as with Rick. Alert, curious, bracing, generous — how well he will be remembered. Deepest sympathy to Elizabeth and to his nearest and dearest.
On behalf of the members, management and trustees of Dublin University Football Club, our sincere condolences to Elizabeth and family on the passing of Rick. Our thoughts are with you at this time. May he Rest In Peace.
I send my deepest sympathy to you, Elizabeth, David, Andrew and Katie at this very sad time for Rick's family and friends. Rick will long be remembered as an eminent international scholar and as a most engaged university teacher. But he will also be remembered as an exemplary Department Head who was a formidably steadfast champion of his academic discipline at UCD. His commitment to French Studies at UCD extended far beyond the call of duty, far beyond leadership, advocacy, and mentorship, and right into the memorable summer hospitality so warmly extended each year by Elizabeth and himself at their family home. Moreover, Rick's kindness to his former mentees far outlasted his retirement from the university. Qu'il repose en paix.
Sincere sympathies. Rest in peace Professor Caldicott.
