Colm O’Byrne

I am so sorry to hear the sad news about Colm. Sincere condolences to all the family. We were colleagues and friends in RTÉ for many years. I still cherish fond memories of great times together filming on location all over the country.

I am so sorry to hear about Colm and my sincerest sympathy to all his family. We only spoke a few times years ago, about bee keeping. He was such a soft spoken gentleman. May he Rest in Peace.

My condolences to Enda, his sisters and wider family. Colm was a true gentleman with whom I had the pleasure to work from time to time while we were on the staff of RTÉ News.

I spent valuable time with him, most memorably in January 1998 when we covered the now canonised Pope John Paul’s visit to Cuba, the first ever by a Pope to that country. I think it was Colm’s last foreign assignment at RTÉ. He was most considerate and the way he interacted with people was a great example to a younger colleague.

I recall that, while working very long hours in the Caribbean heat, he taught me never to carry any kit further than one absolutely needed to. ( I estimate that a cameraperson’s camera, tripod, bulky tapes -which were used at the time- and spare parts weighed over 12 stone.) Quite reasonably, he insisted that the driver of our hackney should come as close to our hotel entrance as possible in order to collect us! And he never once complained about the smell wafting from the spare canister of petrol in the hackney’s boot! Cuba was suffering the effects of a fully comprehensive US embargo at the time, so fuel was hard to come by in a country whose infrastructure had all but collapsed.

Colm was stimulating company, especially at mealtimes. A man of few words, but when he uttered them I listened. “What’s rare is wonderful!,” they say. And Colm was a rare one. RIP, a chara!
