I first met Conor Ryan when I was working as a tv producer in RTÉ and needed a good Irish speaker to talk about Tipperary's prospects in the Munster Hurling Championship. I liked him immediately and he delivered an interview laced with expertise and wit. That was the start of our friendship. Whenever my native Waterford made it to a Munster Final in Semple, Conor would sort out my tickets. He would tell me to go to "Nead an Phréacháin" (the Crow's Nest) in Semple where he did the stadium announcements. Eventually his head would pop out and an envelope containing the tickets would float down. Conor also had a mischevious side. He would tell singers in the pubs of Thurles that I could get them onto the Late Late Show and he told the owner of one tavern in the Square that his pub would feature prominently in my programme on the River Suir. He got the free pints while I had to offer my shame-faced explanations when the shop-front in question didn't feature on the nation's television screens.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Conor Ryan's passing and I was honoured to be asked to help carry him to his final resting place. To his daughters Marguerite and Catríona and to his son Conor, I offer my heartfelt condolences. Fear íontach oillte ildánach ab ea Conchubhar Ó Riain agus Éireannach den chéad scoth.
