It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Bernard.
To Jan, my deepest and heartfelt sympathies to you and to your family. I hold many happy and cherished memories of Bernard around Buncrana and "my glens and my mountains" of Inishowen. He was the best of craic, had a cheeky sense of humour as well as a giggly hearty laugh...such easy company. In particular, I enjoyed his rendition of The Galway Shawl. Another Angel has joined the Heavenly Choir.

Sincere sympathy to Bernard’s family and friends. I worked with Bernard in the Council based in Lifford from his first election in 1979. He was quite a character and very good company. We soldered together abroad representing the Council’s interests.He was a tireless worker for his constituents and wasn’t afraid to call out wrongdoing or poor policy decisions when he saw them.

Bernard was a legend in Donegal life and politics. The Inish Times summed it up well by saying "A Political Giant Has Gone". There is no doubt that they broke the mould when Bernard was created and we doubt we will see his likes again. Forty two years of unbridled service to the people of his beloved Inishowen and Donegal in general is a huge achievement, a lasting legacy to his political life. Bernard was a great personal friend to us. We will never forget his help and support. May the light sod of Culdaff rest lightly on your chest. May you Rest in Peace. You are in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.

To Jan and family , the large crowd that stood outside Ballyshannon for Bernard on Sunday was a testimony to his character. I am deeply saddened by the news of his sudden passing. Not that long ago Bernard attended one of our Ballyshannon FG branch zooms. His contribution as always was excellent, he will be sadly missed by the wider Fine Gael family. RIP Bernard. They don’t make them like you anymore.
