A great legend of Gaelic football has answered the final whistle. A name that will never be forgotten as long as football exists. Scorer in chief of the great Galway 3 in-a-row team of 1964, 1965 and 1966 and very unlucky in 1963, he scored 0-9 in the 64 Final and 1-7 in the 66 Semi-Final. The names still shine out as bright as when they played, Johnny Geraghty, Enda Colleran, Noel Tierney, Bosco McDermott, John Donnellan, Seán Meade, Martin Newell, Mick Reynolds, Mick Garrett, Cyril Dunne, Mattie McDonagh, Séamus Leydon, Christy Tyrrell, Seán Cleary, John Keenan, also Pat Donnellan and Collie McDonagh, Liam Sammon and Jimmy Duggan. They were all delivered to our homes by the great Micheál O'Hehir. No need for Google then or now. They were the unforgettable shining stars of the West which Connacht so dearly needed. Cyril Dunne was one of the outstanding beacons of that team. May He Rest In Peace.

It was always a pleasure to deal with him and I recall the courtesy he showed back in my Connacht Tribune days when he always took a call when you rang the Bord na Mona offices in Shannonbridge when he was manager of the Galway footballers and when it might have been easier not to engage.
