Sincere condolences Joan, Silean, Rob, Darrach, your families and the multitude of friends now in mourning with you. It was a privilege to work closely with Dan during his term as Chairman of the Irish Times and learn from his remarkable skills in creating person to person connections. For the last few years we developed a closer friendship, enjoying deep and sometimes not so deep conversations but always benefiting from his wisdom and guidance. Dan will be remembered as a warm, generous, considerate, compassionate man, the anchor of his family. May the legacy and rich memories of Dan’s contribution to public service continue to inspire and give us energy.
Rest in peace dear friend.

Dan was a pupil of mine at Athy C.B.S. He was a brilliant student and a great credit to our school. He went on to have an illustrious career in the Irish business world. On one occasion I invited him to address a class of graduating Leaving Cert. students. He was a warm, friendly man and an inspiring speaker. He was very proud of the town of Athy and he loved its people. Dan was a leader and a gifted achiever. He was a marvellous, talented and modest man. His passing is a sore loss, not only to his dear wife and children but to the whole country. May he rest in peace

He was a lovely man of great ability and good humour and it was a great pleasure to work with him when he was in the IDA. He was always greatly respected in the Department and his subsequent career amply demonstrated his commitment to unselfish public service.

I had the privilege of attending Dan's lectures at the College of Marketing in the early 70's. It was clear to all then that he would move on to greater things. He was erudite and humble with a great sense of humour - a true role model.

I am really sorry to hear of Dans passing. I always enjoyed my friendly morning chats with him on my Post round.RIP Dan.

Dan was a warm and good man who gave his talents generously to many organisations and causes. Since our days in primary school right through to our retirements, we have met only occasionally but I always enjoyed sharing stories with him and I know how devoted he was to his family. To all of them I send my sympathy on their immeasurable loss.

Dear Joan & family, we were so saddened to hear of Dan's untimely passing yesterday. He was such a good friend and mentor, always available when asked, to share his great wisdom and advice. He was also a person of great dignity, sound in judgement, loving to his family and caring of his friends. We wish we could have spent more time in his company.

Our Athy link, our work together in Washington to improve Ireland's standing on tax issues, our Irish Times connection, all meant the joy of being in Dan's lively company, and so much to talk about in common. His contribution to his country's well-being was immense. He casts a long shadow. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Dan had an exceptional combination of human qualities including his sharp mind , even temperament , innate decency and warm sense of humour . His distinguished subsequent career in pioneering an indigenous development agency Forbairt/Enterprise Ireland and the range of Boards he subsequently led and joined are testimony to the recognition of his exceptional qualities . His continued commitment to the evolution of the Eisenhower Fellowships network on the island of Ireland since 1989 deserves special mention . Ar dheis De go raibh a anam .

Dan was a Council Member of the Institute of Directors during my time as CEO.
He had a wonderful ability to be incisive and ask the right question at the right time. This was all done with a lightness and deftness.
He served on many boards with distinction and had a very successful executive career before that.
We were neighbours for a time in Stillorgan and I have an abiding memory of him out playing with his grandchildren on a local green area, laughing delightedly.

He truly was a family man and I have so many memories over the years in Lakelands where we were always made so welcome and part of the gang. He was a brilliant business mind- and had an amazing way with people. Sage advice was imparted during our "Young entrepreneur" days in Mt A- my millions have yet to be made, Dan but I'll keep at it! There will be no shortage of tales of his good humor and joviality- he embraced every bit of life and will be so greatly missed. RIP
