Darragh and I attended a literary awards ceremony in Swords, north Dublin, some ten years ago. (Neither of us were featured writers at this event.)
On the way to the ceremony, he asked: “Richard, will I be able to recite one of my poems?” and I was like “I don’t think so, Darragh. It’s just for the nominees. But we’ll see.”
So we arrive at the hotel’s first-floor function room, the Mayor of Fingal in attendance and the committee on the stage. Half an hour in, listening to the work of all the poets and authors being read out, and watching as people collect their prizes and certificates, Darragh’s restless. Huffing and puffing, leaning back in his chair, he’s looking around, clearly not keen to stay. He glances at me and I nod at him in encouragement to relax. He nods back at me and he springs up from his chair, and walks towards the event coordinator, a middle-aged woman holding the microphone.
He says: “My name... isn’t important. But I’d just like to do a quick piece if you don’t mind...” and he takes the microphone, and freestyles an impressive two-minute long poem in front of the room full of strangers. Typically Whitmanesque stuff, as I always characterised his work, unifying and celebrating the diverse in life. Wrapping up his verse, he hands back the mike, and sits down again to applause, his performance itch satisfied.
The ceremony continued on, and I looked at him with pride and awe.
“Great stuff, Darragh.”

We were lucky to call Darragh our neighbour for the last 13 years and we will miss his chats over the wall and good laughs. May he rest in peace and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time

This is shocking. I have often thought of the gentle giant that was my primary school friend. We obviously lost touch, but never forgotten. I will always have fond memories. I’m very sorry now that we’ll not get a chance to meet up again.
