RIP Dave. Dave was a neighbour and friend in Cabra, and a friend and colleague in Guinness.

The man I always longed to be is the man my Father was. If you truly knew him. Beyond that stoic facade was a generous and loving heart.

My fondest memories of my Dad are Friday night's on the way to and from Guinness swimming pool. Where my Dad after working all week doing shift work , still found the time to teach myself and my wonderful sister's to swim. Sometimes he would collect us early and sometimes he would collect us late. We might be quite wrinkled at times by the time he collected us. There was a big glass partition separating the pool from the foyer and he would come and wave for us to leave the pool.

On these trips to and from Guinness swimming pool every Friday, was my first exposure to music. Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac and so many others whom I love to this day. I am so happy to say that we saw Roger Waters (Pink Floyd ) live in the Aviva together in 2013. Although I never told him, I had tickets for us to see Eric Clapton live in the Royal Albert Hall last year, but Covid cancelled that.

Beyond music, we shared a love of literature and our mutual favourite poet was William Butler Yeats.

In the words of WB Yeats;
"Think where mans Glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I had Such a Friend."

To paraphrase William Shakespeare;
"Now cracks a noble heart. Goodnight sweet Prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

Dave had a long history of representation on behalf of his fellow workers at Shop Steward, Branch, and then Sectional Committee level in Workers Union of Ireland which became SIPTU for most of his time with Guinness/Diageo.

A stalwart trade unionist with a fierce sense of fairness and justice, his contribution was immense, not just to the immediate interests of his fellow workers but to the continuous improvement and efficiency of the Departments he worked in.

Dave and I worked together on full-time release as SIPTU representatives and it was my great pleasure and privilege to work so closely with him. Dave was an extraordinary man, great company, and a true friend and benefactor. His insightful contribution and unstinting support were inspiring. We were all without doubt the better for having shared our time with him. May he rest in peace.

So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. He made a great contribution to Brewery life. My condolences to all Dave's family and friends. RIP.

Sorry to hear of Daves passing a well liked and respected workmate. I remember he was a young man not long in AGS and he was asked if he played football he replied yes. Then he was asked if he was any good and he replied yes I'm good and over the years we all got to see what a good player he was. My condolences to his family.

So sorry to the Bellew family for your sad loss. I worked with Dave many moons ago in Burke Bros. Phibsborough and eventually ended up living behind the family in Huntstown Park. He was a sound man. Rest in Peace Dave
