Dear Dearbhla, I was so sorry to hear about the passing of David. He was a warm, gentle, witty and brilliant man, always great fun in company and full of positivity and pleasantness. I will always remember him when you’d arrive in together to a dinner at Ciara’s, the pair of you so happy and full of joy. I can only imagine how much you will miss him. You had too short a time together. I hope you find solace over the coming months in remembering all the great times, and how happy you were together. In the times ahead without him I hope the loneliness is bearable and that you will find comfort in your family. To you and to all the family, mo mhór chomhbhrón. Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas síoraí dá anam uasal. Catherine Foley

David and I were neighbours on the South Circular Road, living just a few houses apart. However, it was not until his first year in university that we became friends, after being introduced by a mutual acquaintance.
I spent many a night at David’s home, in front of the fire, listening to music and
talking, sometimes into the early hours. Our discussions were sometimes intense, but never boring. David was great company. Good times! I’m sad at his passing.

My condolences to his family at their great loss.
— Brenda Dean nee Mulhern

I’m so shocked and saddened to hear this news. My deepest sympathies to Caroline, Nick, Julia and Mary & Andy, Charlie & Manus and all the family. David was such a kind, funny person & a true gentleman. I have such wonderful memories of my first tour of Belfast with David giving the running commentary. What a privilege to experience & learn about the North through him in the mid 90s, even though I didn’t understand all the politics at the time. He was so good to me as a young kid & I was treated like one of his own. He was a loving father, with a beautiful family and we were lucky to have such wonderful neighbours. I’m so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace David 🙏

— Anon Co. Kilkenny
My sincerest sympathy to David's family and friends on his untimely passing. I had the pleasure of meeting David at the IMI when on an executive leadership course, he was interviewing participants for a simulated radio programme, a really interesting person who put participants at ease and was genuinely interested in the subject matter. I also recall a brilliant journalist on RTE News during my formative years, where he excelled, particularly in his role as Northern Editor during the peace process and laterally as political correspondent. An all round gentleman who has left a wonderful legacy for which his family can be justifiably proud.
