Bless you David. You've etched many good memories for many people

I trained with David as an EA, preparing to go to Palestine in 2012. That was an extremely intense fortnight and I was so grateful to have David's calm, sincere, joyful and honest presence throughout. He was a lovely man and I wish there was more of his spirit in the world. I was very sad to hear of his death and wish all who loved him comfort.

I wish to express my deepest condolences to Olwen and David's family on his passing. David was a great and talented actor. More importantly, he was a lovely, decent man with a beautiful should. Never to be forgotten. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace.

I would have liked to have been there last Friday to say farewell in person. David was always a pleasure to be with, a kind and decent man, in whom the intrinsic goodness of spirit shone brightly. Dear Olwen . My thoughts are with you and all David’s family and colleagues today. I had the good fortune and privilege of sharing the experience of being part of that first production of Brian Friel’s Translations at the Guild Hall in Derry in 1980 . He was a young English man , like the character of Yolland in the play He had never been in Ireland previously having come as he told us from The Forest of Arden. David took the tough role of Lancey , and the experience of being in Northern Ireland at a very tense and dangerous time politically with open-ness and calm good humour . We all so much enjoyed that tour all over the country in halls schools and Theatres and David , as I remember drove us all in the rickety old bus. He was sincere and reliable and committed. He fell in love with Ireland and then fell in love. He never left . It’s a beautiful story , worthy of a beautiful man . Gentle and kind . Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

I worked with David way back in the day on Scarlett, The Boxer and Ballykissangel. He was a lovely person and a great talent. Condolences to the family, Olwen and friends.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I first met Dave (as I would know him) at university in the late '60s. We shared a sense of humour and a love of making theatre. But Dave had both the talent and the good looks, so you knew then he would become an actor of note. When we met again in Belfast during the premiere tour of Translations it was clear his career was on the move, joining a cast that included Ray McAnally, Liam Neeson, Stephen Rea and Mick Lally.
It's almost 60 years ago since uni, but I still have great memories of working with David, someone who continually delighted audiences with his work on stage and screen. I trust the Atlantic sunset will always shine warmly at his resting place on Omey Island.

Olwen- I was very saddened to read of the passing of David. I have great memories of working with him at The Gate and at Red Kettle and elsewhere. He was a gifted actor with a strong stage presence and always easy to get along with. He had a great sense of humour and a lovely self deprecating quality. He will be sorely missed. Courage and fortitude to you in this difficult time.
