Sincerest condolences for your loss. David was a wonderful person though I did not get to know him well. I admired his paintings, enjoyed our conversations about them and other things, and still have a very vivid expressionist portrait he did (a man- not sure who it's of). I have the feeling he will be missed by a great many people in Galway.
Dear Irene Denise & Deborah , I was shocked & saddened to hear today about David & Barry’s recent passing . They were two wonderful people and I can’t imagine what ur going through . Gr memories of David when taking him to Kilians years ago when he educated me on dinosaurs. I’m devastated for your loss and can’t imagine what ur going through . Irene, Deborah and Denise. I was saddened to hear about David and Barry too. I had a few fond memories of David in school and remember him as such a bright and fun person to talk to. More recently I had a few good old chats with Barry in my workplace as he was a regular customer. I'll miss that. I hope you are all ok and will get through this tough time. Take care.
Irene and Family, My sincerest and deepest condolences to you. May the warmth of feeling for David emanating from these heartfelt messages help soothe your deep sorrow.
To Irene and the Gunning family may I extend my sympathy at your loss of David. May he rest in peace.
Our heartfelt condolences to the entire family who sadly had to give up David in a very short time after Barry.
Many years ago we met David as a young man during a Christmas dinner at the family home in Rathfarnham.
We immediately noticed that music was his passion and it seemed to us that there was an artist in him.
May David rest in peace and hopefully he can speak to his father in the afterlife
We hope to see Irene, Denise and Deborah and the rest of the family soon in Ireland or Portugal, in the mean time sending you hugs.

I am thinking of you all so much the funeral yesterday was the most beautiful funeral I have ever been too everything was so exquisite sending you all so much love
From the death notice photo, I recognised David as a man that I often met walking around Salthill. I often said hello to him or bid him the time of day and he always responded pleasantly, but I never managed to get into a conversation with him or find out his name.
He moved among us, in the Salthill area, but was nameless to most of us. Yet he had a positive presence, always appearing happy with his own company, walking on confidently, not bothering anyone. He often sat looking out at the sea, drinking coffee, in Salthill.
A visit to Salthill Church often featured on his walk. A brief pause, standing inside the front door, probably for a prayer, then a walk through to the rear door, continuing his walk through Oaklands, was his habit. For that reason, I printed his death notice and handed it in to the sacristy in Salthill Church. Like myself, our priests and parish team all recognised his picture. He was prayed for in Monday and Tuesday’s masses, Fr Jennings mentioned him in Tuesday’s homily.
All through last year, my wife and I, on my regular daily walk, when approaching the slipway leading to a small beach, adjacent to the Mutton Island Causeway, were often greeted by a nice aroma of a cooked breakfast from the shore - David’s barbecue. Sadly, nothing had been cooked there over the last few weeks, so I already had a feeling that something was wrong even before reading the death notice.
I hope he is now walking in Paradise and resting in peace.

Dear Irene and Family, so sad to hear of David's passing, may he rest in peace. 🙏
My sincere condolences to the Gunning family. I knew David back in the late 80’s when we were at Dundrum running club together.
We were also distant relatives and would go to training together as I lived around the corner on Pine Valley Avenue. I hadn’t seen him in many years, but all the tributes paint a picture of a very warm and kind person which is also what I recall. Rest In Peace.

It's 30 years since I met David, in the years that followed he had a huge influence on my life, he taught me the value of critical discussion, to open my mind to all possibilities and the Spiderman theme. The kind heart and compassionate soul of a true artist that touched everyone lucky enough to have known him.
To his family, extended family and friends I offer my deepest sympathy and condolences.
Rest in peace

Irene, Denise and Deborah. I am full of memories when David was little he would run circles around us all with the names of dinosaurs Reptiles and the like. He was an extremely bright young man. He will be missed. My heart goes out to you Irene Denise Deborah. Lots love Paul Barbara Jack Mollie
To All of David’s family I extend heartfelt sympathy. I would meet David occasionally in Town and all I can say is that he was the most gentle giant. I always felt he came from a higher place, he spoke with such a beautiful gentle voice that always soothed my soul. I admired him greatly as he touched me so deeply. I felt he was sent to teach us to be kind and not to judge our fellow man. I am incredibly sad at his passing but I am definitely the better for having known him. David you have earned your bed in your Heavenly home so rest until the morn and May God Bless you and keep you safe David You will be missed. I have no doubt I will continue to hear that gentle voice in the “winds that blow and in the Autumn rain and in the stars that shine at night” Slan agus Beannacht

Like so many others, I have many lovely memories of us all growing up together with Denise and the gang in Pine Valley. You were the only guy I knew laid-back and cool enough to rock a tie-dye t-shirt, back in the day. Rest in peace and light Dave x

Our deepest sympathy to David's family on his untimely death. In particular, we think of his mother Irene, who, more than anyone, must surely know the true meaning of sorrow.
We, here in Salthill, are deeply saddened at David's death. We knew and loved him over several years. Yes, gentleness, courtesy and that lovely smile were the hallmarks of his presence among us, too.Souls like David move through this world never drawing attention to themselves; instead, by his very presence David called us to reflect on the ultimate meaning of life. His gifted musicianship brought us many moments of joy while his quiet presence at our dinner table often challenged our intense philosophical and religious discussions, if only by his wry smile.
Dearest David, so much we would have wanted to say to you; so much to tell you; but above all, that we loved you!
