A lovely obit for Dave in The Irish Times 30/4/2022 and a picture that really captures him, a smile and a glint the eye, ready for the world.
It's hard to believe he's gone.

I am so sorry to hear of Dave's untimely passing. RIP.
Elaine,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. I have just joined Castleknock Cycling Club & they recently warmly spoke about Dave. When I say the surname, I realised.
May he rest in peace
With warmest regards Elaine, so sorry. Pat

I was so sorry to hear about David. Such a sad loss. Deepest sympathy to all his dear friends and family. I hung out with David in my teens, such wit and fun. He will be missed very much. R.I.P.
Dear Lilian, Rose, Marie, Elaine, Gerard and family, please accept my sympathy on your loss. I worked alongside Dave in the late 1990s in the sports department of the Sunday Tribune, and from 2010 in the Irish Times, and every memory of him is a happy one. He was one of the nicest people I've ever met. His warm personality and understated manner made him one of the most approachable and most liked people in the office - I sat about ten feet away from him for much of the decade until lockdown and saw how helpful and encouraging he was to everyone, in particular the younger members of staff. He had the perfect temperament for a desk editor and in addition was a gifted writer, and he brought to all of his work a deep seriousness, lightness of touch and meticulous attention to detail (his knowledge of the newspaper's style guide was exceptional). His reportage in 2018 on the Rohingya crisis was outstanding and was something of which he was understandably proud. He was a terrific person and it is heartbreaking that he is gone from us.
Lilian, I am so sorry for your loss, I am thinking of you and your family, may all the calming and comforting energy embrace all of you in this very difficult time.
Dave was a friend and a fantastic colleague in the Irish Times, where we worked together for several years up to 2009. He was very warm, open, engaging, with great wit and always in good humour. His presence was a great boost to the busy sub-editors' desk, which was frequently under a lot of pressure His passions for music and sport were infectious, even to the less sporting among us. It is hard to believe that someone so alive is gone. Every sympathy to Lilian and his family.
Lilian, we were so very sorry to hear about the passing of your husband Dave. We are thinking of you at this incredibly difficult time and want to send you our deepest condolences.
Dear Lilian, Rose, Marie, Elaine, Gerard and family, my heart aches for your loss.
Dave was such a special, exceptional person - I had the privilege of working with Dave for many years at The Irish Times. He was a great colleague and an even better friend. He brought joy and laughter with him everywhere he went. Rest in peace, Dave - we will all miss you so very much.

I had the pleasure - and pleasure it was indeed - of working with Dave in the Sunday Tribune sports department in the late 1990s (and even linked up with him in Leeds one weekend a while later when he was there). He really was, as other people have so rightly said, a great guy. Funny, droll, engaging, warm and marvellous company. It will be a less agreeable world without Dave in it. Suaimhneas sioraí.
Dear Lilian, Rose and all of David’s family, I am so sorry for your terrible loss. I was friends with David many years ago, and he was brilliant, witty, warm and driven then. I’ve seen his star rise from afar over the decades and it was so surprise to those of us who knew him in schooldays to see the great success he achieved, even though he cruelly has only had half the time in this world he should have had. Deepest sympathies. Caoilfhionn.
To Rose and Marie, Elaine and Gerard and to his wife Lilian, my thoughts and prayers have been with you all these past days. Words seem to be totally inadequate at such a sudden death of so talented a man.
Lilian, I am so very sorry to hear about your husbands passing. My thoughts are with you and your family at this time.
My heartfelt condolences to Lilian, Rose, Elaine, Gerard, Marie, and extended family and friends on the sudden passing of Dave. He worked in a different department of the Sunday Times while I was there in the early noughties – I only met him a couple of times, but I'll always remember him: joyous, friendly, ever-smiling. During this time, he was the main organiser of a golfing w/e ('The Gits') for a crowd of journos: he gave a very witty after-dinner speech and was the life and soul of the party. A lovely human being, a leader, and a real high-flyer.
I'm so sorry for your loss – my heart goes out to all who loved him. You gave Dave a beautiful send-off.

My sincere condolences to Lilian and the rest of the family. Wishing you peace, comfort and courage at this difficult time. This loss makes no sense. The only thing that is certain is that your beloved's light will never fade.
Heartfelt sympathies on Dave’s passing. I have great memories of our time working together at The Irish Times. He was always a joy to work with. I’m glad I got to catch up with him recently when he joined Castleknock Cycling Club where he was a great addition to the ranks. Rest in peace.

I played 5 a side footie with Dave for the past year or so. He was an impressive, technically gifted player and a gent to boot. We were all deeply shocked at his sudden passing. My deepest condolences to Lillian and Daves extended family. RIP
I was extremely shocked to hear of Dave's passing. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.
I worked on Saturdays in the sports department of the Tribune. My abiding memory of Dave's time there was meeting his mum Rose most Saturdays when she would arrive in to collect his laptop before he would head out for a few pints at the end of the working day. I also fondly remember how he got on with everyone and his good humour and kindness. My sincerest condolences to Lilian, Rose and all of Dave's family. Cherish the memories, they will help with the sad times ahead.

David and I met deep in the Himalayan steppes 22 years ago. Since that day, his appetite for the fullest possible life has never waned. Because of who he was; his sense of humour; his perceptive eye, he was always the best company. I have so many cherished memories. I will think upon them frequently. Goodbye, my friend. Go well. I shall miss you.

I was shocked to hear of the sudden death of Dave. As a former colleague at the Irish Times Dave would frequently wander over to the picture desk, often to point out a remarkable pic he had seen on the wires to make sure it wasn't missed. His patience, his smile, his good humour and smart journalism will be greatly missed professionally and personally. Rest in peace Dave. Sincere condolences to Lillian and all Dave's family.
Rose, Marie, Gerard, Elaine and Lillian, my heartfelt condolences on your dreadful loss. Dave was indeed a brightly shining light, and the world is a lesser place without him. I would say may he rest in peace, but that doesn’t feel like something he’d particularly enjoy. So, may he watch over you all in light and happiness instead.

My deepest sympathy to you Lilian, on the loss of your beloved Dave. Thinking of you and your family during this painful time.
I worked with Dave for years in the Irish Times and his kindness, good humour and wit never failed to make the newsroom a brighter place. I'm so sad to hear of his passing. Condolences to Lilian and all his family.
My sincerest condolences to Lilian and all of Dave's family, to suffer the loss of somebody as wonderful as Dave must be very hard to try come to terms with. He really was one of life's special people.
I'll miss his witty, good natured banter and his part in the comedy act he and Chris Dooley perfected over the years, working together on the Foreign Desk. As busy as he was, there was always time for some humour and a chat. He was an absolute pleasure to work with.
Perhaps his only flaw was his outrageously loud sneezes - which left me and my coffee fueled nerves clinging to the ceiling! But Dave, being Dave, before he could even catch his breath again, he would shout an apology over my way. It always made me laugh. I'll miss those sneezes too.
Rest in Peace Dave, I hope you knew just how much you were loved by so many.

Of all the spirited raconteurs, sages, anoraks and eccentrics who plied their trade in The Irish Times, it was an honour and pleasure to have worked alongside Dave . . . the newspaper will be a less colourful place without him . . . sincerest condolences to his wife Lilian and family.
Dear Lilian, I'm terribly sorry for your loss, sending my heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies. Sincerely, Victor
