David Neligan

I was greatly saddened to read of David's death. A former pupil of St Columba's College, he returned there to teach French and German after graduating from TCD. There were only two of us taking French in the sixth form in his first year of teaching in 1958 -59 and as he wasn't much older than us we enjoyed his classes, particularly his sense of humour and his enthusiasm for language.

Little did we know what a distinguished career he would have..the world will be a sadder place without him.

My deepest sympathy to Kate, Oliver, kids and the whole family. They say a great wedding speech is remembered for the love it leaves behind, and I still smile when I think of the speech your father gave back then. May his memory be a blessing.

We were sadly only able to meet David on a few occasions but were always struck by his great warmth and humour.

We all loved his birthday tradition of playing the recorder.

He will be sadly missed .

I have worked in David and Maura Neligans garden for 4 years. I was lucky to be able to chat to him briefly from time to time. Mr Neligan really was a very nice kind Gentleman sadly the last of a dying breed only ever had nice things to say. My condolences to his wife Maura and family.

Deepest sympathy to Maura and family. David was such an inspiring colleague and boss in DFA.

I will always remember the wonderful welcome and support that David and Maura gave me on my first concert tour in Japan way back in 1976. They could not have been more charming and helpful and even somehow managed to entice the present Emperor of Japan to my recital who was only about 12 then (being the son of the then Crown Prince). Every time I met them both was a total pleasure and I wish I had met them more often. I send Maura and his family my deepest sympathy. He did so much good for Ireland.
