Today, as I went about my business, I stood waiting in the sunshine…and the last time I stood in this exact spot, I was talking to you, David. Seems like yesterday, it was recently, under the same sunshine with the same people around me.

I thought what I would say to you now if you walked over to me as you did back then, the things I would see for in you and the questions I would ask you. Now, I would see things differently and I would have made sure you were ok. I would have fought for you, if only I had known how much you needed a friend. See the thing is David, you were so good at everything, that you were so good at protecting us from what you were feeling about yourself. My biggest regret is that I did not know that you were hurting.

Your passing has affected us all very deeply. If only you knew. You were everything we all wanted to be. And the emptiness seems so much larger for some reason.

I wish the family, David’s parents and all his innumerable other friends some healing. Even after these long weeks since his passing, we feel genuine grief. May we all have the strength to heal from the loss of David and the heart to remember how wonderful he was. Rest In Peace David. We all loved you x

Anyone affected by the untimely death of David, please do reach out for help. It is perfectly ok to not feel ok, and although we do not talk about these things normally, do know it is ok to seek a helping hand from a professional.

You’d be surprised how many people need that helping hand, so know there is no stigma, there is no judgment and there is no point suffering in silence. Learn the language, learn the signs, learn to help yourself. Learn to see the signs in others who just may be suffering in silence.

David was one in 6 billion. He was unique. Let us all learn to help each other and to help ourselves so that this does not happen again in our community. I guess in Cavan we are not taught how to express our emotions or how we feel, so let’s work on that, let’s really talk and let’s really feel ok about life and ourselves. Let’s get the kettle on, and let’s talk. And let’s do it for our beautiful David.

Let’s check in with each other and find out how we are REALLY doing. Let’s hug, let’s talk - let’s connect. Life has become complicated so let’s communicate and let’s seek help. Self-awareness and knowing when we need help is an important tool for our survival. There is lots of help out there, so let’s not keep secrets and let’s all talk. No matter your creed, gender, family situation, relationship status, outlook, prospects, sexual orientation, political outlook or educational achievements - let’s try to accept, help and find peace.
