I was very sad to hear about David passing. He was kind, fun, thoughtful and an inspiration to be around. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

On behalf of our whole school community, past and present, I'd like to extend our heartfelt condolences to all of David's heartbroken family. David was a member of staff in Oranmore Boys NS from 2005 to 2012 and to say he left a lasting impression is an understatement.

The outpouring of grief was palpable amongst staff over the last week as we reminisced on the time he spent in our school when he started out in his teaching career. The Comenius trips abroad, the sporting events, the staff nights out, the list of wonderful memories we have are endless.

When David left our school to move to Dublin, he left his Dad's impressive trophy behind for our use. We named the trophy, 'The Saunders Cup' and have since held an annual sporting event, called 'The Saunders Cup' tournament. Over the years we joked with David that he must come to Oranmore to be a guest of honour at the Saunders Cup event.
We will continue with this tradition in our school to honour and remember David and we will endeavor to pass on his values of kindness, dedication and living life to the full to all of our pupils, in memory of our wonderful, kind, caring, former colleague and friend.

I was so very sad and shocked to hear of David's passing. We were housemates together in Oranmore nearly 20 years ago and David was always an absolute gentleman and just a gem of a person. I was one of those privileged parents that had Mr. Saunders as my son’s Teacher. He was one of the most inspirational, kind, patient, understanding, encouraging, humorous, caring and thoughtful teachers.

Thank you again Mr. Saunders, you made maths less complex, but more importantly you taught the most important lessons in life of honesty, kindness and living life to the full. The ‘real’ lessons in life that I know my son and indeed all David’s students will carry with them throughout their lives.

David was a very special soul - a man of integrity, strong, so generous with his time, always smiling. A gentleman.
I am one of the many lives that David touched during his life. We started together in DRETNS in 2015 and I am so very honoured that I got to work so closely with such an inspiring teacher. We formed a great bond through our many chats and he was a wonderful friend to me these past 8 years - one who provided much empathy and kindness, always with a listening ear and the right words, after the recent passing of both my parents.

Like scattered seeds, memories will never be forgotten. You will be forever missed. Rest easy my friend, I'll keep playing those tunes✨
