Although the world may seem smaller and darker without him, and the void he leaves behind may bring sadness, it is the life he lived and the courage he showed to stand out and stand up when it mattered that will be an inspiration to others to come.

Time will move on but in the heart of his community he will always be remembered.

I offer my sincere sympathies to Carmel, Declan's beloved partner and to their young daughters, Esme and Samantha. My condolences go also to the wider family, friends and all who loved him.
Declan lived his life with a rock-solid commitment to justice and helping others. A profound sense of solidarity informed his activism. While we celebrate this, it should be recalled that he himself had known more than his share of hard times.
Declan was kind, intelligent and resourceful yet, in his humility, he wouldn't have recognised the towering figure he, in fact, was.
It has been an honour and a privilege to have had Declan as my friend, albeit briefly and I am utterly bereft at his untimely death. While I feel this personally, I know how firmly Declan believed in community. It is as a community (or, as a network of communities) that we now grieve and to properly honour Declan, I think we should recognise that he would have wanted us to be there for one and other at this sad time.
Rest in peace and rise in glory, Declan!

So hard to find words to capture the bewildering pain at the tragic loss of such a precious soul, as was Declan. His heart was always so warmly tilted towards others, especially those who were being unjustly treated in any way. Despite his own tough life experiences he fervently spent his energies trying to help others. May his courageous example inspire us forever.

I have no words. You where a highly intelligent man and did so much for others. You took the time to help me with an issue and guided me to the right people who i would have never had contact with without your help. You where in with us sunday night again just wanting to give and had such a great day with Carmel and your beautiful girls. You spent your time here just helping others and even when i thanked you you would not take any credit at all. A very humble and amazing soul. For a man who suffered so much loss in your life you took your grief and you stood tall and helped anyone in need of it didnt matter what nationality. You will be greatly missed by everyone who has had the pleasure of being in your company. My thoughts are with all who knew him and especially Carmel and the girls.
