It is with great sadness to learn of the passing of my old friend Denis Byrne of long ago growing up on the batteries. Sincere and deepest sympathy to Denise's wife and family and to his siblings Robbie, Joan and Brendan, Denis was a great young footballer in his younger days and we played together for many years on the St Peters /choir soccer team in the school boy league with Brendan Grehan our manager and we shared many great memories on Sunday mornings on Gentex Pitch, and Long evenings on the Batteries and the Meadows.Denis played at Centre forward and we played in many final's in St Mels park. Denis passing has stirred up many memories of the great carer's of the youth and junior soccer leagues at the time , Billy Mc Cormac, Brendan Parkes, Jackie Quinn, Cisco Flynn, who gave all their spare time to youth development . They instilled in us a great decipline during a time of poor facilities, and poor communities, Remembering Denise's parents Brendan and Una Byrne at this time also, May Denis and all those community people rest in peace.
