Sad to read of your father's death, Celia. Sincere sympathy to you and all your family. My memory of him goes back many years. I remember one day I had a visit from a very tall parent who had dropped by to deliver a pair of knitting needles to his daughter----you. I remember those days with much happiness Celia and know your will miss your loving father. May he rest in peace.
Sincere condolences to you Celia and to all your family.
My deepest gratitude to that astonishing thinker and mentor and friend. Denis was patient with me, as my dissertation director at NYU several years ago. I still hear his voice when I read Yeats and Joyce. He could hear all the music in modern literature, and bring it all to life. He taught generations to read slowly and deeply, and to care about eloquent language as a first order of human value. So much in this life to celebrate.
A great friend and a great man has gone from us and the world is a lesser place for his passing. For close to forty years we were part of the New York University family and shared countless dinners and celebrations. Denis was a brilliant scholar and exemplary teacher who brought wit and wisdom into every gathering. Fortunately, we are left with our happy memories of our times together and his prolific writings to keep him alive in our feelings and thoughts.
These last lines from William Butler Yeats' "The Wandering of Oisin" seem fitting:
I will go to Caoilte, and Conan, and Bran, Sceolan, Lomar,
And dwell in the house of the Fenians, be they in flames or at feast."

I deeply mourn the death of my friend and NYU Colleague Denis Donoghue. I first got to know Denis when I sat in on his class on James Joyce's Ulysses in the Irish House at NYU. I enjoyed the class immensely, memorably when Denis just read from the text in his beautiful deep Irish brogue. I just sat back and listened. It was perfect! The next year I again sat in on his class on iIrish playwrights beginning with Yeats. I gained an appreciation of these writers that I never had before. Most memorable was a class reading of a section of Beckett's Waiting for Godot in which Denis allowed me to participate. Denis would get together frequently in his last years at NYU with me and my wife Carlotta for dinners and other social occasions at our home and neighborhood restaurants. Dinner with Denis was a delight, with his sharp wit, lively intellect and the wonderful life stories he shared with us. These occasions were a highlight of my final years at NYU. I miss him enormously, Rest in Peace, Denis.
Deepest sympathy to you Celia and your family on the death of your father. So sad to lose such a towering person in your life. Thinking of you especially at this time.
Condolences to all the Donoghue family on the passing of Denis. We particularly remember his interest in the North, to which he was a friend always.
We recall with fondness the occasions shared with Denis and Frances over many years and latterly with him and Melissa. May God be good to him.

Deepest sympathy to Dave and Jill and all the Donoghue family.
I got to know Denis well over some years when he acted as a judge for the Irish Times Literature Prizes. His knowledge of literature was extraordinary and his conversation and wit was a constant joy. His memoir Warrenpoint is a marvelous read and a fascinating slice of Irish social history.
May he rest in peace.

I was a student of Professor Donoghue at UCD in the late '70s. He was an inspirational teacher and his lectures were always packed. He encouraged close reading and sceptical criticism. A great Yeats advocate but also a promoter of Jacobean revenge tragedies, Henry James, Cormac McCarthy and early Mamet. A world-class intellectual and prolific essayist and critic. Will be greatly missed. R.I.P.
Sincere condolences on behalf of all the Cronin family. Go raibh sé i measc na saoi is na n-uasal.
Deepest sympathy to all the family on your loss. Thinking of you especially at this time.
Sincere condolences to the Donoghue family from the O'Neill cousins. What a splendid career Denis had! Of his many publications we really enjoyed "Warrenpoint". His account of his family's connection to Irish Independence published in the NY Review of Books in 2016 was personal and touching. May he rest in peace.
I will be forever grateful for Denis Donoghue, a wonderful teacher and mentor who directed my dissertation at NYU about twenty years ago. My condolences to his family. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.
Deepest sympathy to the Donoghue family on your sad loss. Denis was an extraordinary scholar and teacher. I was a student of his in UCD in the 1970s and like many others will always remember the magnificence of his performances in Theatre L. In the smaller confines of his room, with an awe struck MA class, his reading of AR Ammons “Corsons Inlet” returns to me repeatedly over years - “Tomorrow, a new walk is a new walk”. RIP
We've been out of touch since he left NYU, but Denis was a wonderful colleague and friend to me and my late wife, Anne Hollander, during the years we were together in New York. A distinguished and lovable man. All my sympathy.
Sincere sympathy on the death of Denis. He was remembered with great affection in Tullow by my parents Tim and Kitty and by my Aunt Jenny and Uncle Benny. He always showed calm good sense and wore his wisdom and learning very lightly. He leaves a wonderful Legacy. Rest in peace. Mary Donoghue, Tullow and Sicily and Jane Sheehan Fitzgerald, Tullow and Galway.
I am so saddened to hear of the death of Denis Donoghue.
I felt like I knew him a little bit after reading his book Warrenpoint, a place close to where I grew up. I had hoped to contact him.
God grant him eternal rest and peace

Our deepest sympathies to you Celia,Joe and all the family on the death of your Dad
Would I were back in UCD to hear Denis recite, inimitably, "Antique Harvesters" or "Sunday Morning" ! RIP, Denis.
Gratitude and Beatitude, Maestro!
Professor Donoghue's formidable presence guided me in and out of the classroom. I am ever indebted to his glowing guidance. DD was also raconteur of the first rank and any conversational gifts I possess can be attributed to some wonderful extracurricular chats with the Man. What a legacy! Ulster excellence!

Truly a great man. His lectures on Pope, Shakespeare, and many others were always stunning performances, usually filling the Physics Theatre in UCD to the point where there was standing room only. Not only did he teach to the syllabus but his wide frame of reference meant that we were introduced to a host of other authors and critics we had never heard of before. His magnificent speaking voice added to the performance each time. Much of what he said has stayed with me for life and influenced my own teaching."When comes such another?"
Sincere condolences to all the Donoghue family from the McGarry cousins. Denis led a great life and was held in such high regard by all. He was always very dearly thought of by his sister Kathleen, our late mother. May he rest in peace.
Deepest sympathy to Celia, Joe and all the family on the death of Denis. He was a lovely man and will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace. The Kelly family.
I was a student of Denis Donoghue; he directed my Master's Thesis at NYU in 1982. I still remember our conversations over coffee. He called out a phrase in my paper about Wallace Stevens and the "intimate heroism" of writing poetry. I'll remember that always. Later, I had the privilege of publishing him at Yale University Press. He touched many people in many ways. Condolences to his family. What happens when we die? The people who love us miss us.
Dear Celia, Joe and all the Donoghue family. We are so sorry for your loss. May Denis rest in peace. Thinking of you all at this sad and difficult time.

Sincere sympathy, Celia, to you and David and to all your family. As a former student of his, I had a very happy experience of meeting Denis again in more recent years. For that - and all the rest - I will remember him with gratitude.
I cherish the memory of Denis Donoghue’s inspiring lectures at U C D.
