It was with great sadness that I learnt of the passing of Denis. I first met Denis many years ago when I started my early morning commute to Dublin. I will remember his smiley face and the craic my fellow commuter friends and I had with him. I always enjoyed the chat and banter with him, it made the journey shorter. He was always in good humour despite the early morning start... he will be sorely missed by all. My condolences to the Phelan family and to the extended family, may Denis rest in peace.

Heartfelt condolences to the Phelan family on the sad passing of Denis. For those of us travelling from Athenry, he always made the commute to Dublin that bit more tolerable. If we were in a group, you could be sure of a bit of craic and messing when Denis came by. If you were on your own on those winter mornings, he'd always take the time to stop and chat. Either way, Denis always seemed to make the long trek feel that bit shorter. Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a hanam uasal.

To the entire Phelan family, extended relatives and friends, I send my deepest sympathies on the very sad passing of Denis. I have been a regular commuter from Athenry to Dublin since 2011 and I had many warm and engaging chats with Denis about life, politics, the economy and family. He spoke so fondly of his family, and was so proud of his children and grandchildren. Our conversations often helped to pass time on the many arduous journeys I made to and from Dublin Each week over the years. May Denis rest in peace. Olwyn McWeeney

Deepest sympathies to all of the Phelan family on the sad passing of Denis. I was fortunate to get to know Denis through the Handball club in Moycullen, he was a great player with a lovely, traditional, underarm stroke and soft touches in the front court. I was delighted for him when he won his All-Ireland in 2016. This was a much deserved reward for all of his years of hard work and dedication both on and off the court which Donnchadh referred to in his beautiful tribute during the mass today. I also have fond memories of many chats, as Fr. Michael mentioned, on train journeys when Denis would stop by for a chat. Denis was a lovely man , a real gentleman and he will be sadly missed.
