Derek BURKE

On behalf of the McMahon family, I wish to pass on my sincere condolences to the family of Derek. He was a lifelong friend to my dad, Timothy and a friend to my entire family offering help and advice in his, no doubt, well known selfless manner. Rest in peace Derek, you’ve earned your wings.

Rob really looked up to his Dad. He always spoke about him at school and you could tell he was proud of his father and his achievements.
Whenever I spent time at the Burke's house in Clonskeagh, there was an incredible amount of mischief in the house. Derek appeared to be the prime instigator and this rubbed off on his youngest son.
I didn't know Derek that well but I saw him through the eyes and actions of one of the nicest people I have ever met. I think this is a testament to the kind of person and father Derek was.

For all the kids growing up in Clonskeagh in the 80s & 90s, thoughts of Derek Burke bring nothing but the fondest of childhood memories. He created a very loving and fun home where we were always happy to be. His fridge was the best in the neighbourhood, he would buy the latest gadgets, and he let us watch Terminator 2 in his company before any of us were over 15. As I got older, I became more aware of his true qualities such as his work ethic and compassion, which along with his sartorial standards, have often given me inspiration. But probably what Derek rightly counted as his greatest virtue was being a brilliant dad to five incredible kids.

I was very close to Rob, Derek's son, for 4 or so years before he had his tragic accident, and I am eternally reminded of him.
I distinctly remember how often he would talk about his dad.

He thought his dad was hilarious and he certainly admired him greatly.

I also remember how Rob's great friend, Rebecca, made no attempt at keeping it a secret from us that she had a bit of a crush on Derek.

I didn't get to know Derek very well but I think many people found him to be a bit of a dude.

My deepest sympathies and my very best wishes to all of the Burke family.
