I was a teenage barman in the Stuart in the 1980s, and looked up to Derek as the complete professional in the industry.. The busier the bar, the more composed and efficient he was. That competence and ability, coupled with such a pleasant and friendly disposition marked him out as a special person, easily remembered decades after his departure for New York. I’m sorry I didn’t catch up with him properly after his return, but I send this note to sympathise with his family and join with so many others in confirming huge respect for Derek. One of the very best of our generation. One of the Malahide greats
