It is with deep sadness I have come to learn of this great man’s death through google tonight . I quit smoking many years ago thanks to Mr. Derek Cobbs truly remarkable gift . I have found myself in a position of needing his help again for a different addiction and I was trying to make contact when I read the sad news of his passing . May his beautiful soul rest in eternal peace and I will light a candle in his memory and pray that his beautiful gift & guidance will help me . 🙏🏻

I've just learned of the passing of my uncle Derek. Although I had not seen Derek since we left for Canada when I was about 5, I had been in contact with him over the past number of years sharing pictures and stories. Derek was an extremely interesting man with many talents. I'm sure he will be very missed by all who knew him. My condolences to all who were lucky enough to have known him and share time with him.

Deepest condolences to Derek’s family & friends on his very sad passing. Derek was a much admired and respected man throughout Longford. I have fond memories of winning a £5 voucher from ‘Uncle Larry’ 40+ years ago and having my ‘star’ letter published on Uncle Larry’s Page in the Longford News. It was a big deal for a young kid back then. I still have the newspaper clipping. Thanks for the memories Derek. Rest in gentle peace.

Sincere sympathy to Derek's family and all who mourn Derek. Derek was devoted to Longford, and did it much service over the years. My adult children still have some of their Uncle Larry letters. He was always generous in his coverage of Clondra, its' history, the canal and all festivals. I want to thank him for his efforts to find the lost box of Richmond Harbour records lent by the late Jim Lennon to someone in 1983 but never returned. Maybe someone will come across them and return to the village. It would be a lovely tribute to the late Derek. I do not intend to cause any disrespect by mentioning this but to give credit to Derek for his efforts Please request it be removed if you feel its inappropriate. RIP Derek. Go Raibh Maith Agat Slan

I am saddened to hear of Dereks passing. I worked for Derek in the Longford News in the mid 80s and then in Adbadge on Dublin Street. He was a great boss and true gentleman. My deepest sympathies to his great friends and family. May he rest in peace.

Derek gave me my first job in journalism in the 80’s when my interview hardly merited selection and his unique and creative style ensured a fantastic training for us all. Training which extended to Peter Clarkes, The Tally-Ho and McKeons when the weekly paper was ‘put to bed’. The master of the Page 1 layout and the headline. Great times and a great man
