I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Derek was a great friend and colleague. For years I hot-desked at his seat in the Law Library and he was very tolerant of me! We had many chats and I know he was a very proud father to his two girls. He will be greatly missed.

The entire Kirwan family in Sandymount were truly sad to hear about Derek's passing. My 84 year old Mum has prayed for him every day for years and for Stephanie and the girls, a family he worshipped, that filled him with joy and pride. I feel sure so many good memories will sustain you all.

Derek's face lit up when he spoke about you and your daughters. His family were his world. That he is gone from your world and this world is hard to comprehend. I respected Derek very much. His ease with himself and his effortless ability to find a topic of conversation that interested whoever he was talking to made him a pleasure to be around. He was a truly likeable human being. I am so sorry for the loss of the most decent of people.

Stephanie, Lucy and Grace you were never far from Dereks thoughts. Dereks was so proud of your successes Lucy and Grace at piano, horse riding and ballet and he loved to provide a welcome update of your latest achievements which was always a pleasure to behold because of the smile that broke across his face as he spoke about you. One of my memories of Derek in work was when we had a client from Vietnam and he greeted him with a bow and in his own language which was a quintessential "Uncle Derek" moment of kindness. I also remember Derek making his way up the stairs very quickly ...when a prisoner escaped after our consultation with him in Dundalk and Dermot Lavery (RIP) and myself were temporarily held up in a room under the court and this was something that Dermot enjoyed to remind Derek about regularly. We will miss you Derek. I know that Derek will never be far from you Stephanie, Lucy and Grace and that he will continue to be so proud of you and to guide you gently through your lives.
