Sincere sympathies to Derek's mother and his family. I was very saddened and shocked to hear the sad news of Derek's passing last week. We trained together in Oxford in 1977/78 and while our career paths went in different directions, we met up along the way often in the strangest of circumstances such as in a small supermarket in Jakarta in 1994. As many of the condolences mention, Derek was gregarious and always great fun to be with but underneath all the craic and banter was a thoroughly decent gentleman. Rest in Peace Derek - gone way too soon.

It was with deep sadness that I learned of Derek’s passing last Wednesday.RIP.
Derek was a close colleague and Friend over the last number of years at SAS Ireland.
Derek was a lovely man with a warm personality, kind hearted, gregarious and great fun to be with. He was most knowledgeable in all matters Aviation and had a wonderful aviation career spanning many Continents.
He is and will be sadly missed by all of us in SAS Ireland but especially in the Flight Operations Department where he was a constant source of knowledge and support for all our Pilots and crew.Condolences to all the Dawson Family

We are saddened to hear of Derek's passing. Just a few years older than me, he was always the 'adult' on the estate: the person who knew what's what and knew where he was going. So it seemed to us as children and so it turned out to be.

From our first encounter in Lagos in 1983, Gulf Air Bahrain, Singapore Airlines and SAS, Derek was intelligent, jovial, fun - and a lovely pilot! We are still in shock. Gone much too soon. Our sincere condolences to all the family.
