Nuala, You may remember me from the 1970s. Derek and I shared a love of running at TCD and had some fun times with many others at DUHAC. Derek and I were in email correspondence towards the end of COVID era, where I learned of his illness. So sorry to hear about his passing. May he rest in peace.

Hi Nuala, it was with real sadness that I heard of Derek’s death. We shared many a laugh and had many a discussion, political and otherwise, during our time together in OAKGROVE. My sincerest condolences, Jimmy.

From all his former colleagues at Foyle College. We have fond memories of Derek. He and I went through school together and joined the staff in 1975 for many years. Our sympathy to Nula, Catriona and Molly.

We were very sorry to hear the sad news about Derek. Enda, Robert and I were glad we had the opportunity to get together with him last month. He was full of life and reveling in the company of family. The memory of that last meeting with him is a gift we’ll always cherish. Condolences to all the family.

Dear Nuala, Molly, Catríona, and the wider family. I’m so sorry to hear of Derek’s passing. I have lovely memories of music nights at my mum and dad’s, with the fire roaring, where Derek would spin us a yarn or share a poem. Part of the original Oakgrove family and a huge loss. Thinking of you .

Deepest Sympathy to the Lambe/Row and extended family on the very sad passing of Derek. I got to know Derek when I was childminder to his wonderful grandchildren. Derek would often come over to house when I was there and we wld have the few chats what a lovely gentleman he was. Fond memories of him. Rest in Peace Derek.

There is deep sadness in Oakgrove Integrated College, Derry-Londonderry at the news of Derek's death. Derek and Nuala were pioneering teachers in this city's vision of a school to bring together children of different beliefs and backgrounds, who would learn together, and so build a future which was better than the past. Derek and Nuala shaped this school in its foundation years, and continued to nurture it through their dedicated service to so many young students, families and colleagues. Gratitude and appreciation are etched forever in the many lives made better by their presence. Derek is remembered with affection by the Oakgrove family. "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die."

I am very sorry to hear the sad news of Derek's death.
Thanks to Derek, my eldest daughter, Kate, who had a tumultuous time at the school where he taught A-level Economics in Derry some 36 years ago, was able to successfully attend University. He was patient with her, yet challenging, treating her respectfully as a young adult and encouraging her to always do better!
