My sincerest condolences to all dereks beautiful family I used to babysit all dereks children a long time ago and although now not living in rathmines just recently learned of his passing. Sending you all lots of love and warmth at this very sad time xx

An absolutely lovely man, we always enjoyed bumping into Derek over a pint in Rathmines. He will be greatly missed.

Deeply saddened to hear of Derek's passing. He was a true gentleman, beautifully mannered, charming and a delight to see and talk with. Sincerest condolences to his family.

So sorry Derek is gone, he will always live in our memories, we all had great admiration for Derek and what he achieved, although I did not see him very often after leaving Larkhill, I will miss knowing how he would have some day enjoyed a happy retirement, RIP Derek.

As a long term customer of Yamamori, I saw Derek regularly but did not have the honour of knowing him personally. He was a rare breed of person that you can just tell they are kind & genuine without even knowing them. Sincerest condolences to Derek’s family, friends & colleagues. I was so very sorry to hear about Derek. I have very fond memories of him from my time working in Mother Reillys, he was lovely to all the staff and was always very encouraging as I was studying and doing my exams. We have so many fond memories of nights in Mc Daniels spent listening to the funny stories funny stories Derek told, his unique laugh and words of wisdom won't be forgotten.... He thought me the right way to mix wasbi and soy sauce a trick I'll always remember... and pass on to others... so simple.... Genius!!!

I belatedly heard of Derek's passing Tuesday evening and regret I missed the service. I wish to pass on my sincere condolences to all his family. We were neighbors for many years on Georges St and Derek was always a great business neighbor and so kind to me and all my family anytime we dined in Yamamori. We will always remember him with great fondness.

O I am so shocked to hear of Derek’s death. What a lovely kind man. He always had a few words to say anytime he saw me in the George’s Street restaurant. He will be so missed.

As a mentor he was always within reach without ever being in the way.
He gave me carte blanche and blank cheques (literally) to be creative within his Japanese hospitality empire.
He supplied me with enough work to help me pay my tuition fees.
He bought my college exhibition images before they even touched the wall.
His advice was curt and succinct with the aim of getting the best from me.
He pushed me to try harder and learn more, the client and the product is key.

Because of his advice, I always strive to mentor others in the same way I too was mentored.

I was only one of many that he took under his wing and gave the opportunity to make something of themselves in Dublin and farther afield. I credit my personal and professional growth to Derek and very few others.

He will be sadly missed, yet created such a strong legacy that he will never be forgotten.

Rest easy big man.

Saddened to hear of the death of Derek, worked for him when we opened the first Yamamori restaurant and it was tricky but he was always upbeat and optimistic and never gave up and success followed,met him several years later and asked how was business,and his face lit up and he told me the restaurant was officially the busiest in Dublin and I was truly delighted for him,rare to meet such a wonderful kind and generous man,may he rest in peace

I never knew Derek personally but I wanted to share my condolences with the family as I have enjoyed so many happy memories with family and friends over the years thanks to meals at the yamimori restaurants. As such it was with great sadness I read of Derek’s passing today. May he Rest In Peace.

Derek was like a second father to me but my pain must be nothing compared to yours.
I wanted to show my respect here but I am struggling to find the right words.
What a great warm-hearted down-to-earth person Derek was that my limited English ability cannot express.
But I would like to share my favorite memory of Derek that I would like everyone to know.
One day, I had to serve an unprecedented rude customer at his restaurant. Derek came in from nowhere and voluntarily took over serving the table. And he told the customer that he doesn't want any business from the people who cannot respect his employee. He was a dad in shiny silver armor. I will always treasure the memory and his wild laugh.

So sorry to hear of the death of your beloved father Emma, Julie, Graham and Robert. Derek was a great man. We always got on so well and enjoyed many a laugh together. I always admired his can do attitude, ethos of hard work and interest in the wider world. A very forward-thinking man especially when it came to establishing Yamamori almost three decades ago. He will be sorely missed.

Very sad to learn of the passing of Derek Ryan. Mr Suave as I would refer to him to friends. Dublin culture throughout the 90’s and 00’s owes a lot to Derek. Although we didn’t know him personally he was a staple of life on George’s street and he will be missed as part of that furniture .
