I remember fondly the first time we met Derek, 10 years ago in Killaloe, after being introduced by his loving partner Sandra. The first thing I noticed was his amazing intellect followed closely by his humour. It was a pleasure knowing him in the ensuing years and he will be sadly missed.

We were deeply saddened to hear of Derek’s passing this week.
I have such warm and fond memories of him from our younger days. The last time we met was in 2011, when my sister Mary and I had the pleasure of visiting him at his home in Killaloe. We shared many wonderful chats and laughs—his unmistakable sense of humour shining through as always.
He was truly a very special person. He will be sadly missed.

I worked with Derek offshore over several years and we became good friends. Derek had a great sense of humour, was always interesting and genuine. My condolences to Dereks family. He will be missed.

A unique and lovely man, Derek’s passing will leave an irreplaceable gap in the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. A close neighbour both in Killaloe (and, coincidentally, in Cambridge in the early 80s), Derek became a dear and special friend. Along with his many friends all over the world, we’ll miss his excellent company. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family and of course to Sandra. May he rest in perfect peace now after a life we’ll lived.

Sad news on the passing of Derek, we met only briefly and I never had the pleasure of sailing with him but have heard a few of the stories! RIP

So very very sad to hear of Derek’s passing. He was my mother’s first cousin, but to me and my siblings he was always more like a beloved uncle - full of stories, humour and gentle kindness.
I have such fond memories of him from childhood and although we didn’t see each other as often as I would have liked in recent years, it always struck me how warmly he spoke of his friends, his children and particularly his grandchildren, who he absolutely adored!
