Dermot Collery

Sympathy to the Collery family on the death of Dermott who was our neighbour growing up in Hanley Terrace and who taught us history in Summerhill.
Dermott was profoundly learned man and his knowledge of literature, history and local area was astounding. I visited him in CCU in SUH a few weeks before his untimely death and he bore his illness with fortitude, good humour and grace.
We will miss him deeply

Dermot was modest in his approach, understated in his manner, decent, and without pretension. He had a disarming sense of humour, and was quick to seize the comical side of life, when his infectious laugh would ensure that we saw it too.
He wore his learning lightly; sometimes it was only when you were talking to him about some literary work that a mild interjection from him, would show that he knew as much or more about the subject than you did.
It was qualities such as these that made Dermot such a likeable man. It’s as if he applied to himself Charles Dickens’s advice for living:
“Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.”
We will miss you, Dermot. Rest in peace.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dermot. He was my English teacher in Summerhill College in the early 1970s, and his influence has stayed with me throughout my life. Dermot possessed a deep knowledge and passion for the English language—its prose, poetry, and power—and a rare willingness to share that passion with his students.

At a time when learning was often based on rote, Dermot taught in a way that inspired true understanding and appreciation. He opened our minds to the beauty and rhythm of words, and in doing so, awakened in me a lifelong love of the English language.

For that gift, and for the privilege of having learned from him, I will always be profoundly grateful.

May he rest in peace.

So sorry to hear about Dermot’s death. Condolences to all of his family and friends. He was my English teacher in the early seventies. A fabulous teacher but also a teacher that was very good to all of his students and treated everybody very fairly and a great teacher to have a good conservation with. Very fond memories of a very good man. May he rest in peace.

Our uncle Dermot was foremost a good man. A “gentle” man in all ways; wonderfully thoughtful and caring. He wore his encyclopaedic knowledge lightly; his priority to make others feel comfortable in any given situation.

Forever supportive regardless of circumstance: certain to provide empathy, but never judgement.

He even offered to make the journey over to London to help our father, his brother Shane, when dying in July, although he must have already been in so much pain himself by then.

What we will remember most is that along with his quiet kindness and intelligence came a brilliant, and often wonderfully childish sense of fun and humour, second to none.

His face when laughing was a joy to watch, and his laughter a joy to listen to.

Whether it was clever wordplay, puns, mimicry, or absurdist flights of fancy he enjoyed and practised them all.

Whilst neither Orla or myself are able to be at the funeral on Wednesday, we all know that we were blessed to have such a man as our Uncle.

We cherish the memories and time spent with him, especially over the past couple of months, and wish we had done more for him. A true Sligo and Yeats man with a love of his birthplace. Rest in Peace dear dear Dermot.
