Dermot (Der) O'BRIEN

My dear friend Der, I have just heard the news of your passing. My sincere condolences to mags and John who he absolutely adored. My best memories are when I joined biochemistry in 1997 with Der, the girls in the office and the scientists. I will always remember Der’s humour he brought to use all. Rest in peace my dear friend, until we meet again 🥰🙏🏻🙏🏻

I am very sad to kearn of the passing of a great man like Der.
I met him when i joined the staff if the biochemistry lab in St James Hospital in Dublin in 1977.
Der became a great friend and a mentor. He encouraged me in everything, work, life and play.
We sang together (his 40th birthday party in Kenny's pub), went fishing, golfing and sailing together.
When I shared our plans to emigrate to Canada, he shared many memories of his time there with me. He was ber supportive and encouraging, especially when second thoughts intruded. He was inspirational and full of generosity in spirit.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and loved him.
May you, John, and your family find comfort im the love that nany had for him.

I have had the good fortune to have known Der for 43 years. He quickly became a friend when I joined the Biochemistry Department in St. James's in 1982. I have many good memories of our times sailing together in the 1980s and early 1990s in Dun Laoghaire, and our voyages to East Ferry, Port St. Mary and Pwllheli. His wit and good humour have been a tonic during our many years as work colleagues, and our regular meet-ups over the years since then. I will miss him.

My sincere condolences to Margaret and John on the passing of Der O'Brien. A proud Corkman and Cobhman. I was lucky to work in St James's with him, starting in 1992. He was the best of company and wore a deep intelligence lightly.
