Dermot Mc Carthy

To all the McCarthy family, especially my auld pal Olan… I have many happy memories of time spent in your home growing up. It was always a very welcoming house, whether we were recording own on GAA commentary, playing subbuteo or eating buns. Irene and Dermot brought that warm welcome.

May Dermot Rest in Peace

Mr McCarthy was an excellent teacher—witty and enthusiastic. (I went on to study Economics at university, in large part because of the enthusiasm for the subject he had fostered.) I remember he used sometimes to exit through the window at the end of the day, in order to avoid the crowds thronging Assembly! His dedication to students was demonstrated by the revision classes he held at weekends in the run up to exams. And it was always a pleasure to chat to him around a Christmas, when he was collecting for SVDP in Donegal.

Sad to learn of the passing of Dermot, a former teacher of mine at AVS for many years. A character who will be sorely missed. Our condolences and sympathy to his family and wider circle.

Though we may have sadly lost someone, in many ways we never really ‘lose’ them. For they are with us every single day, and we can feel their presence strongly. Guiding us and caring for us as always.

Justin is more than a friend to me, he was my brother for a year.
I remember the 2 times I spent at your house in Donegal and felt always at home with all of you and Dermot.

Unfortunatelly we never met but what I can say is that you did very well. Your son Justin, is one of the most impressive persons I ever had the luck to cross paths with and I am pretty sure that was thanks to your good work raising him. For that alone I must say thank you and let you know that all my Love is with him and your family.
