One of my first working experiences with Derrick was on a large project in Limerick in the early 1990’s. He was a fantastic engineer and even better person. He would always share his knowledge with younger engineers, always eager to impart guidance in a very personable way. He will always be remembered with great fondness in Arup, one of the true gentlemen.

I was very sorry to hear of Derrick's death. I served for many years with him on the ACEI executive. I knew him as a very respected engineer, a real gentleman and a person it was always a joy to meet in any place or at any time. My deepest sympathy to all his family.

I've very fond memories of Derrick in my early days of joining Arup. Always smiling always positive and in good form. I recall Derrick and Heather would attend many of the Arup Cork Christmas parties in those early days and be very much part of the crowd on the night. And of course, there is the professional legacy he has left behind. Derrick made his dent.

I was very sorry to hear of Derrick's passing. I had many interactions with him in both the ACEI and IStructE and enjoyed every one of them. He was a pure gentleman with a great sense of humour. A great loss!
