To all of Derry's family, my thoughts on this sad ocassion roll back to when I was a 16 year old lad, going up to Derry to give me a job in Anco. Indeed he did, he seemed to have a deep compassionate heart and understanding for the youth and the uphill battle we struggled with in the 80's. He always smiled when we met and when I told him i was now playing Sax and Clarinet upon meeting him at the Greyhound, he asked me to play something, so I took out the Clarinet and played Stanger on the shore for him.. Derry smiling threw his eyes up in the air "Another Billy Curtin" was his response. Billy was my teacher. I took it as a compliment but Derry was an even greater stylist and musician than I could ever hope to be. Maya Angelou said: People will forget your actions, they will forget your words, but never forget how you made them feel" and as a broke kid going up to Monavalley, Derry would say "is there a check there for Mark?" To which the answer "no" would come. "That's a mistake, print one off there for him" and the lady would so I could take my £30 and go out at the weekend to Spirals. You made me feel worthwhile Derry. Thank you and May the Lord repeat with compassion those words at Heavens Gate "Is Derry's name in the book of life?" And the Angel will say "yes Lord, its right here."

I was sorry to read of your Dad's passing. I remember him as a gentleman, from many years ago in the Old Monastery Killarney. He is sadly recently deceased by our Buddies Jim Gallagher & Tim O'Keeffe. We had many happy days with them Brian. May they sleep in blissful peace ❤

Very sorry to hear of Derry's passing. He used to teach my son the clarinet. I always looked forward to bringing him for lessons. Derry was a gifted teacher and musician and full of class.
