Heartfelt sympathies to Rosemarie, Caroline, Alison, Denise, all his grandchildren, his mother Anne and sisters. Learning to drive is a coming of age thing and I was privy at very close quarters to a most important rite of passage in Derry's youth - his driving lessons with his father, Rory. These took place one summer while on holiday in Fethard-on-Sea when Derry was seventeen or eighteen. Derry didn't mind for a minute that I was virtually perched on his shoulder in the back of the little blue Fiat for nearly every lesson. The dynamic between Rory and Derry was a pleasure to watch at such close quarters - Rory's trusting communication and Derry, enthusiastic, eager to learn and devoted to every instruction. I too was glued to every word of Rory's and this is how I learned to drive. One thing Rory emphasised was holding the hands on the steering wheel at five-to and five-past which would protect the chest in the event of a crash. Imagine. At the age of ten or eleven therefore, I was prepared to secretly get behind the wheel for the first time. I thank Derry for allowing me along for the ride back then, and I thank Rory for unwittingly teaching me one of life's most important skills. Derry went too soon. May he rest in peace.

Rosemarie and the McPhillips Family,

I am sad to hear of my cousin Derry's passing and I offer my condolences to all.
From first meeting him as a boy at Denis and Maire Hogan's farm in the early sixties, to the last time having a pint with him some ten years ago in Kilkenny, I have always enjoyed our rambling conversation. I have looked forward to the next time, and now I will miss his company when I visit again.
