I'm so sorry to hear of Derry's passing. My thoughts and condolences to his family, particularly to Derry, Anthony, Sandra and kids - who he was so very proud of. I will always have fond memories of your dad/grandad - what a kind soul he was; a gentleman. For many years, when I lived in Australia, myself and Derry were penpals. I always looked forward to his handwritten letters and to hearing the news from The Rendezvous and home. He told me I would be a journalist, long before I ever trained to be one! When I returned home to Cork, I'd occasionally meet him in the Rendez for a Beamish, or call to his house for a cup of tea, a chat and a run down of what he had been growing in his garden. He was a great gardener. I am thankful to him for sharing his wisdom, stories and craic over the years. Full of mischief he was, with an unforgettable smile that will be etched in my memories forever. He will be so missed. I have no doubt that himself and the lovely Phyllis are reunited in heaven. My thoughts are with you, lads. May Derry rest in peace. X

I had the pleasure of knowing Derry at work in The Examiner, on his regular walks at Ballinphellic (where I live) and indeed I always enjoyed a few words with him in the Rendezvous on a Saturday night from time to time.
