My deepest sympathy to Isolde, Derval and Dekin and all their family. I first met Derry in the 1980s at the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris at a poetry translation workshop which tackled the challenge of translating into French his beautifully crafted poem "On the Rough Glen Road" (which he had translated from Irish, "Chím m'athair mar othar / ar rothar gan roth..."). The years that followed saw many memorable gatherings among young and old, together with Jean and the children. Every conversation with Derry's was a delight with his wry sense of humour and his unique take on life's minor and major paradoxes. Mairfidh a chuimhne in ár measc.

I knew Derry from being a fellow student in Rochestown College boarding school and later in the Capuchin Franciscan Order. In later life we both left the religious life and my wife Margaret and myself frequently visited him, his wife Jean and his daughters in his apartment on Passage Rauch, near Avenue Ledru-Rollin in Paris.
Derry was an hilarious storyteller, a great companion and conversationalist, and a powerful poet. His laughter was infectious: you were already in stitches before the punch-line of his stories was reached. His poem Marbhghin 1943: Glaoch ar Liombo (Stillbirth 1943: a Call to Limbo) remains a powerful testament against the practice of consigning unbaptised stillborn children to unhallowed graves. Derry was a Gentleman whom I had the pleasure of knowing and working with here in Paris. Always a gentle word, encouraging and positive. His children were his pride and joy whom he spoke of very fondly. He is now reunited with Jean. I am grateful to have been able to join in via livestream to celebrate his life this morning in Dublin. Our condolences to you all, and to Isolde and Dervla. Derry and Jean were great friends of ours when we were in Paris and used to meet regularly in the Irish College.
We are all very sad at his passing and thinking of Jean too.

I recited Stillborn 1943 at my mother's headstone unveiling in Ohakune New Zealand in 2017 to remember her two stillborn sidlings. Those present who had suffered miscarriages wept. A great and very valued poet. All my love to his family.

We were deeply saddened at the news of Derry’s death and we wish to offer our sympathies to Isolde, Derval and Dekin, as well as his grandchildren, sisters and his extended family. I (Seán) knew Derry since we were both at primary school even though we did not attend the same one. We also attended different post primary schools but renewed the friendship at UCC. There was another gap when he went to live and work in France but I attended his triumphal return to Bantry when he celebrated winning ‘Duais an Oireachtais’ for his collection of Irish poetry, in the late eighties. I still stand by my view that his work ranks with the best of contemporary poetry, written in the Irish language. On his return to Paris, we maintained an ongoing conversation, conducted by email, while his health permitted. We spent a memorable Bastille Day in his company in Paris in the late nineties and of course there was the celebration of his 70th birthday in Bantry. I regret that we will not be in Dublin for the final event but Séamas, our eldest son, will act as our ‘aide de camp’ and plenipotentiary on Tuesday and we will both be in virtual attendance with the help of the livestream on Wednesday morning. Derry, a chara, cé go mbeidh tú as ár radharc as so amach, beidh tú in ár measc go deo tré shaibhreas an tsaothair a fhág tú id dhiaidh. ‘Slán is céad ón dtaobh so’ uainn.

I would like to express my sympathy and the assurance of my prayers to Derry's family and all those who mourn his passing. I particularly express my sympathy to the community of the Chapelle Saint Patrick, Collège des Irlandais, in Paris, where I was privileged to be chaplain for three years and where Derry was a faithful worshipper. Each Sunday, Derry read a prayer from the the Irish Tradition after Communion. Jokingly, I once teased him because of the predominance of Cork saints. The comeback was a prayer to Saint Kieran, preserved in Greek, on the following Sunday! Derry was always kind, patient and gracious and I always appreciated his gentle supportive presence.
