Des Byrne was admired and respected in Drumcar. His empathy with vulnerable people and his understanding of the unfair cultural position in which they found themselves was second to none. This he expressed as a strong outspoken advocate, unafraid to challenge the status quo. Yet he remained popular, respected, witty, great crack compassionate, and modest.

I never heard anyone say a bad word about Des. We played football together, drank too much but when we met as colleagues, his professionalism and open-mindedness helped me and others to tease out and attack the ‘issues at stake’ in the messy milieu of relationships.

Des didn’t deserve to leave the world the way he did, but in doing, he drew attention, as in life, to human fragility, the land and community, and vulnerability that calls for compassion with action. Grace, who I don’t think I met before, and their children JP and Harry, should forever walk tall and live life to the full as Des would have wanted you to. You had him for a relatively short time but not many have a guy so enmeshed with their lives, their DNA, as Des was -son, husband, dad, brother, nephew, uncle, in-law, colleague, friend and best friend. How lucky to have known Des. He has been reunited with the stardust that brought his soul, his DNA, to this blue rock all those millions of years ago. May you and we all look forward to mixing our ashes together in the universe, but not just yet! RIP.

I am so sorry to hear of the very sad death of Des. I offer my deepest sympathy to his family. I knew Des from my days in St Mary's Drumcar. Des would always stop for a chat and will be so missed by the men and women he supported ever day. Remembered at Mass here in Wexford.
