“You were on call last night, Tom? I hope you didn’t get called out of bed, did you?”

So evidently did it torture Des to learn of his colleagues’ wee-hours exertions that one was tempted to lie to him. But you just couldn’t lie to Dessie McGinley: It would be like lying to God.

Of all Des and Peggie's new-graduate veterinary assistants, I may have been the most inept, to put it politely.

And yet, throughout my seven years in Milford, not for one moment did I witness so much as one hint of one wince of disapproval from Des or from Peggie! On the contrary, Des would suggest that he had always done worse, himself, and that one of the many great consolations of age was that one ceased beating oneself up for one's mistakes much more quickly!

"You know, Tom, I never, ever took on any work - I never did any work - for the money: I mean..."

"I know what you mean, Des!"

Obviously, Des and Peggie put people and animals first, money last.

And so enough money came, but so, too, did five incredible, gentleman sons, a host of receptive young vets and vet students, and those incomparable partners in their lives, Eamonn and Mary-Ellen Gillespie, and then Frank and Marie McRory, all four so stunningly straight from Central Casting - in Heaven.

We are all equal, of course - and Des and Peggie are THE Greatest!
