I offer the Smyth family my most sincere condolences upon the recent death of poor Des. Des was a cheerful and kind man who was well respected by all who had the privilege of meeting him.

I thoroughly enjoyed my conversations with him during Mount Merrion Historical Society meetings and other events in the local area. His hard work and dedication to the Mount Merrion Historical Society will be appreciated by many local historians for many more years to come.

My sincerest sympathies to you Alice and all the Smyth family. Des was a great friend of my Dad Lloyd and I would have met Des on a few occasions. I always remember him as a lovely man and he had that great smile on his face. Thinking of you all during this difficult time.

Dear Alice, Sara, Grace, Susie and family, my sincere condolences for the passing of Des. Already, over the last few months, I have missed receiving e-mails with his jokes and observations. Like Des, I had the opportunity to travel to many countries and be paid to do it. Additionally, I was the family historian on the other side of the Atlantic. As you might imagine, this combination fueled memorable conversations during get-togethers in Dublin and Washington. He was a great man, who was very proud of all of you, and I was fortunate to have known him.

I was so sad to hear recently of Des' passing. I worked with him for many years on the MMRA committee and greatly appreciated his ability to quickly solve any difficulty or problem as well as his good humour and hard work. He loved Mount Merrion, knew its history well and worked to protect its "garden city" character. He will be missed by so many and I wish to send my condolences to Alice and all his family.
