It’s taken me a moment to write this, as I struggle to grasp this sudden loss. Thank you so much Des for being the friend and confidant that I needed. Your wisdom, kind words and great sense of humour will remain with me for the remainder of my life. Thank you for being you.

I was so sad to hear about Desmond’s passing🙏🏼 We played together whenever he came to limerick for the holidays as a kid (cousins). He was always full of stories, in search of fun & adventure. Herewith I would like to express my sincerest condolences to Desmond's family and loved ones.
Hopefully, we all got a little piece of Desmond's warm and gentle soul. The world could do with more people like him. I got the impression that he loved to experience and explore things. He went out and about and even to a concert of the 'Toppers', singing in a language that he did not even understand. He had broad interests. He was so happy to have seen his sister this summer, when she was visiting the Netherlands. He spoke so fondly of her and the rest of his family. He was very impressed that she could keep all her scouts ‘in check’. Desmond will be missed. His kindness and great sense of humour. I wish you all lots of strength to come to terms with such a great loss. Rest in peace Des.

Dear FitzGerald family, we are deeply saddened by the passing away of our dear colleague Desmond. Over the past months we were working together at NN in the Hague and I got to know Des as a dedicated, warm, kind and gentle person. I will always remember his good sense of humor, broad interests and love for his homeland Ireland. He will be missed. Our thoughts are with you in these difficult times. May his soul rest in peace.

I am so sorry to hear this news about Des. We worked together for some time and I loved our conversations and casework discussions- and his honesty and curiosity and his excellent sense of mischief. He made me laugh a lot. I have always assumed our worlds would come together again at some point for more laughter and discussions about anything and everything.

He meant so much to so many people and made a difference. He will be missed.

I will always remember Des's ability to easily accept others without judgement. He was a wonderful friend and being around him always brightened my day. We had so much hearty laughter together and the memory of his brilliant sense of humour will always stay with me.

Shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Des. My time working at Irish Life was all the better with you there, a wonderful colleague and a true friend. Even after we both moved on to different chapters in our lives, we remained in touch, and I always looked forward to your yearly Christmas card, filled with all your news.

Only working for a relative short time at our teams there where some moments of personal interactions when exchanging on differences in companies cultures where we both had worked. Desmond was quite clear in his observations and describing it in a positive way.

I have only known Desmond for a short time, as colleagues at NN. We got acquainted over a discussions about genealogy; as my parents were on a quest to learn more about our family history in Cork this summer. To my pleasant surprise, Desmond was a professional genealogist!

Desmond was very kind, friendly, and knowledgeable. He will be missed. Rest in peace Desmond.

I'm so deeply sorry to hear the news of Des's demise. I first met him 25 years ago and from that time onwards he always struck me as a very kind, generous, gold-hearted man with a towering intellect, a dazzling smile and a delightful sense of humour.

So sorry to hear of Desmond’s passing, tragically young. My most vivid memory of Desmond is dancing a slow set at a Lifetime do to Whitney Houston singing ‘I will always love you’ both of us belting the lyrics out at the top of our voices.
