There surely was a deep sense of sadness and loss through the entire community at the passing of Dom Murtagh on Sunday, 19th October, not only had the Murtagh family suffered a deep personal loss but so many Gaels felt the loss of one of The Downs and Westmeath finest fooballers and of course everyone privileged to know Dom had lost a very unassuming gentleman and genuine friend. He was always there to encourage the youth and so often gave of his time to show them the finer skills of the game of football. At work, rest and play Dom Murtagh stood tall, he has left a lasting legacy.

Our paths crossed frequently through our love of the GAA in our youthful years with Westmeath and at Club level in many encounters between The Downs and Moate. The Downs were the Kingpins of Westmeath football in a golden era back then .

It was a privilege to wear the Maroon and White with stalwarts like Dom and the late departed colleagues such as Mick Carley, George Keane, Mick Murphy and Paddy Buckley.

Thanks for the memories and I pray you will all unite again in the love of God in eternal happiness in Heaven.
