So sorry to hear of Donie's passing - an absolute gent - I first got to know him from covering the courts on Washington Street but it was around the Coal Quay that I used to meet him most often - seeing him deal with the troubled souls on the street, I often thought he epitomized the best of An Garda Siochana - firm but sensible -and he always seemed to have time for people - many was the enjoyable chats we had about Cork hurling. My sympathies to you all on your sad loss.

Your dad saved someone from going into the river one night when she was very drunk, That woman made a full recovery and is still alive today.She has not taken an alcoholic drink for years. That womans nephew and godchild was in national school with Donal jr and was in G O Rourke's class with Donal jr too. Very sorry to hear about Donie passing away. I had the pleasure of getting to know Donie when we brought a kids Gaelic Football team from Hartford Connecticut back to Ballincollig GAA club a number of years ago which Donie facilitated, a great host and a gent. Rest in Peace Donie.
