Very sorry to hear of Donal's passing. Privileged to have had him as my English teacher in the Academy back in the day. One of the great educators of his time, who opened many of our minds to the wonders of poetry and prose. It's not everyone who could make the words of Milton & Shelley seem fascinating to the average teenager! And it was never forced, his unique teaching skills brought you along with him. Also the pleasure of enjoying the odd late night pint with Donal in The Mousetrap many years later.

We are so sorry to hear of Donal’s passing. I have no doubt his Darling Hetty was the first person he saw as he sadly left ye. They were a modern couple before their time. We were very fortunate to live next door as we reared our young family. They were so kind and giving. Cómhbhrón ó chroí.

Like many a basketballer, I remember Mr Kiely for what I now realise was his untiring community work in the Youth Club, and his siopadóireacht together with many others during Saturday night’s Fox’s Disco.

Mary and Denis I am sending deepest sympathy to you and your families on the death of your beloved Dad and Grandad R.I.P.on behalf of St Mary’s Secondary Staff as you mourn this special man. Those were the days when the bond between the two schools was special and interconnected. It is right and fitting to remember Mr Kiely especially as Vice Principal who was the link between us.

Thinking fondly of “Mr. Donal Kiely “ my English teacher back in the Academy Mallow in the 60’s . I can still remember his gentle mannerisms- the stick of chalk poised while making a point . A role model for any budding teacher . I followed him in that role a generation later . May he rest in peace .

Saddened to learn of Donal's passing, sincere condolences to immediate and extended family. Donal was a great English teacher and was greatly admired by his past pupils. He was, in my mind, the epitome of what a true gentleman should be and was a credit to the teaching profession. Up to a short time back, Donal enjoyed his nightly trips to the Mousetrap and will be missed greatly by his legion of friends. However, the greatest loss will be to his loving family and we will pray for all of you during the difficult months ahead. Sincere sympathy to Mary, Denis, and all the Kiely family on the death of your father. Donal thought me in the Academy for 5 years. Donal was admired and respected by all the students. A very good teacher, a very good person, fair and honest in dealing with all his students. I also spent some time with Donal in Mallow youth centre. Donal was a founder member of Mallow youth centre. He spent a large part of his life keeping Mallow youth centre going. All the kids using the youth centre today need to know the credit due to Donal for the youth club we have today. Donal is a person I count myself very lucky to have known. I do not think Donal knew how much he was respected by all the students  who passed through the Academy during his time. May he rest in peace.
